Do Mac's Get Viruses?

Locked

I have a Question for the fellow :clixsense: Mac Users like Myself!

Do you believe Mac's get viruses? (According to Sophos and some other Virus Protection Companies, They do!)

Have you ever had a Mac Virus? Has someone you know or met ever had one?

I've never had a virus on my mac.

I have never had a Mac Virus.

I had a Windows Virus from one of my School's once, It could not do any harm and Sophos Anti Virus Alerted me and It got removed. (I copied a Powerpoint I did in School onto my USB Flash Drive, and then put it on my Mac at home with Microsoft Office for Mac)

But If I then gave that USB Drive to someone with Windows without removing the Threat, They could be Infected!

Its extremely rare since nothing is full proof.
I remeber installing Kaspersky on my Mac and it started causing shut down issues. I used to always get the spinning gear after I hit the shut down button. So finally, I always had to forcibly shut down my Mac by holding the Power button for about 3-5 seconds.
I got so frustrated that I reinstalled the OS completely. Now I will never use Kaspersky on my Mac although I cannot live without it on my Windows computer.

I'd suggest you try ClamXav. Its available for free from the MacApp Store and uses very little system resources.

Just check out the next version of OS X - Mountain Lion. Another one from the :kitty: family

I have kapersky but it just sits there like a bump on a log. I don't like it. I was thinking of uninstalling it but
not sure how yet.

Another operating system, so soon? I've been thinking about getting a laptop but also have been waiting to
see if they come out with something newer. I don't really need a laptop, just kind of would like to have one
by apple. And I'm considering the 15 inch, not the 17 inch, so it won't be as bulky to take with me on the go.
I don't have an IPad, still debating on it or the laptop.

Wonder what will come after they run thru all the big cats?

I am using CleanMyMac which can uninstalls all softwares completely. It removes all items associated with that app in the Library also. Its also got a Cache cleaner. So you could give it a try.
I am eagerly waiting for Piriform to release the stable version of CCleaner for Mac.

Exactly. Its way too soon comparing the time gap between Snow Leopard and Lion.

I'll have to check that out...'CleanMyMac'.

I have used crap cleaner for many many years on pc's. Always liked it. Did not know
they were making it for mac too. That's great news.

I guess they could go with snakes....OS PYTHON. Apple is getting a little scary.

I use "CleanMyMac" and "MacKeeper"

They are both Great Software! However MacKeeper has many more features but it costs something like $35 for 1 Mac

MacKeeper promises a lot but does not deliver.
Its got a Data Recovery tool which is completely useless. I accidentally deleted files on my external HD and MacKeeper couldn't recover anything
I finally had to use a Windows software to recover around 70% of my lost data.

My son is using a Mac .... and he is a safety freak. So he protects himself with Antivirus software. The best way out, that is to go without KASPERSKY and colleagues, is Linux: I have used it as its Ubuntu distributions for more than 3 years by now .... never had any protection software .... and even though I am daily walking my way through hostile sections of internet I never confronted any attack, whereas my MS and Mac-friends suffered from severe troubles.

Linux and Ubuntu are probably the safest Operating Systems to date! Because their Market Share is Very Small!

This is the Most Recent Picture I could find!

There are 2 sights of security for OS/browser.

one is having less security-deficency (MS-Product Windows or IE (browser)
one is beeing few attckat (OS Mac&linux browser firefox or chrome)

beeing less attact is easy for those who have lesse skills to protect, while there is less need to do.

my mental attitude is (eg) i trust more to ms than eg to google, so i have to do more work to make my ie secure than downloading chrome, cause of more attacs.

google eg uses security-defiencies of browser to grab information about the people using their search-engine, i think thats more dangerous than a virus (against a virus i can beware ...).

But i said this is a question of mental attitude.

By the way : i use a customized browser which seems to be an IE to internet thats sometimes very funny to detect the attacs ans see how clumsy they are ... ^^
