*Checking the screenshots*

Yup, that's hardware issues -- I thought at first it might be a rootkit messing up, but pic2 is a clear one. What also worries me is pic3 -- it shows that the fan is malfunctioning; perhaps requires a maintenance as well ( the use of an air can to carefully blow out the residual dust that gathered in the fan ducts is noted, the process will need a bit care so as not to damage the fan)

The failure might have been caused, not by physical jarring ( dropping / moving the gear suddenly while processing programs ) but by heat

Sad to say, dax, you'll also have to be careful when running self-assessment programs like that when checking the HD; I read that doing this several times could increase the damage even further -- so it's good you got the screencaps up; don't run anymore self-assessment test, and start backing up what you can -- afraid this will put a dent in your budget :(

My laptop is a messy one -- it even won't let the battery charge up

Well, I must be backing up atleast 200 GB of data (* fainted *)
But I am glad that the important and confidential files are always synced with the Google Drive

IF HEAT is the Problem, id like to share my experience:

Originally my laptop had an average temperature of 63 degrees, & when it was running benchmark test it was crashing because temps reach 99 degrees....

Then i thought id bring it to a center to have the dust removed and replace the thermal paste on the processor...

but then i saw a recommendation to use a Vacuum cleaner and I did a thorough suck at the vents & at the keyboard and now my Idle temp is around 45-47 degrees. DOWN 15+ whopping DEGREES

AND MY WINDOWS performance index even IMPROVED

I have not turned off my laptop for straight 2 weeks now and average temperature is at 49 degrees!

I cant stress this enough.. if this is a laptop USE A VACUUM CLEANER ;)
(now a ritual i do once a month)

Good luck dax! You have one pretty annoying problem there....

Ouch! Adding failing batteries too to the technical issues on your gear, dax -- If it's not the battery management programs ( every manufacturing company has an appropriate program that monitors the battery ) that had failed for you, then it's age of the gear / length of usage that caused the lack of the battery to charge up properly ( or to discharge inappropriately )

*sigh* Hope you got the Christmas wish for a new laptop/desktop :o

I think it is a good idea to clean the system with the cleaner -- Do you clean out your fan with it ??

edit :

I don't have one right now -- but want to try in the future.

Your wish for me has been granted by Santa
Got a new VAIO SVE15127CNB yesterday -- I have been preparing the recovery disks and installing the basic software all the two days.

I want you guys to be absolutely sure about one thing :

I want to move my data from the damaged HDD to the new Lap -- Would there be any problem ?

Honestly, I haven't tried the idea of transferring files from a damaged HD to a new one, since I've made it a habit to always keep hard copy backups ( burned to CDs / flash drives ) but if you wish to, try first to exhaust all available options off the Web by checking references from other Forums, just to make sure it might help, before going 'half-assured' into something like this

If the files, though, that you speak of are just stand-alone items ( documents, personal files ) it's ok, no issues there -- but if it's programs that are installed from the old HD, guess you'll need the installers for those ( if you still have them ) and re-install them into the new laptop

*checking with references off the Web*

I am afraid of the Integrity as said in the second link you provided.

I am not sure if the integrity is still good or not :(

Glad you edited and gave green on files, I will be moving them.

I have movies too -- What do you say about them?

I have already moved the MS Office 2007 suite and installed -- there are no problems as of now
I am trying as much as possible to download fresh copies of installers like CCleaner, browsers, flash, java and other softwares from the net.

Apart from movies, I have loads of pics -- may be ranging to 15 GB
Do you give green for them ?

I don't have an Ethernet Cable to connect both of them :?
Although I found another way : Easy Windows-Linux File Sharing with a LiveCD « That's Geeky

I have just downloaded the OS and will give it a try.

 You're good to transfer those -- I thought you meant transferring already installed programs from the old HD to the new one -- that would mean you'd be needing the installer; transferring files like that are ok *nod, nod*

Meanwhile, you can either sell the old laptop ( you can either sell it as is, or salvage the memory sticks and what you need, and sell the rest ), or use it for secondary options ( ex: a secondary screen -- a.k.a. dual screen usage / a multimedia picture frame / Wi-Fi hub )

:geek: Forgot to add -- in relation to HDs failing due to heat, it's because some forget to leave at least a portion of space in between the bottom of their laptops and the surface their gear's are resting

Rule of thumbs: Always leave one inch space between your laptop and the flat resting surface, in order to have sufficient airflow

For a quick measure if you don't want to reach for a ruler -- just do a 'thumbs-up' gesture; the distance from the tip of your extended thumb to the closed fist is roughly two inches

:?: What can one use to make the space? Anything -- a couple of pocket books, bottle caps, empty match boxes

:?: Do I need to buy those laptop cooler pads ( like those sold with portable fans and doohickeys? ) Nah, I say 'go frugal' ( a.k.a. cheap ) and just get a simple electric fan and direct it to you and to the space in between the flat surface and the laptop

:?: What if I use it on my lap? Same thing -- as long there's a good airflow ( in this case, the said electric fan or an open window with a moderately strong breeze ) and that you're not blocking the vents underneath your laptop ( yes, there are vents -- just look underneath later  )

I guess the article falls under the idea that if you also want to install a bigger or new HD, but your current Windows is installed in the old HD -- doing this would relinquish ( remove ) authority from the old HD, then if you wish to replace the HD, and install a Windows OS, simply pop in the code ( it's the sticker at the bottom of the laptop -- make sure it's readable: write it down and store it safely )

But there's a catch: reading the comments from that article -- some mentioned that OEM-licences ( pre-installed... don't know about this ) won't work, while Retail Licenses might; then there's a few comments that mention that make me worry

Not sure if it's worth a go -- best to try checking with your laptop's retailer/distributor, since laptop company distributors have warranties, and among the warranty list ( under maintenance ) is when the customer wishes to upgrade their HD for a bigger capacity and want to transfer the current Windows license to that

Best let authorized personnel deal with this ( that way, if something does go wrong -- it'll be them to blame  and you won't lose on the warranty )

BTW -- like the article quoted: "Between Microsoft and your OEM there are a number of different laws that determine whether you are allowed to use your license on another PC, so follow this tutorial at your own risk."

UPDATE: If you, dear reader, have plans to format your HD as stated above by yourself -- Don't do it! Something will definitely go wrong; always consult a technician or service personnel in regards to it
