It must be near the end of the world.

Maybe I need to stop listening/watching the news.

So far, quickly checking online at CNN -- there's the news of the football incident, issue of a lawsuit of a 6-yr old girl, and a court ruling about a cross on a hill; no news yet about shootings ( yet )

I don't know if youthful abandon would be the blame for this ( we passed that stage; teen life with the 'I can do anything' attitude and all ) -- but kids ( or teens ) have been more restless and far more expressive than it was years ago -- and not to mention the expansion of information via social medias ( internet included -- there was no YouTube a decade ago )

It's anyone's guess why kids are what they are today :(

:!: EDIT -- News about the shooting can now be viewed at the BBC News site online: BBC News - Gunman dead after Centennial, Colorado, school shooting

:? Makes me wonder... after this news, is it going to be predictable that some US politicians are going to make the "we need more stronger gun laws" speech again?

Oh sure no doubt there will be politicians, as usual, hollering for stronger gun laws.
It's not gun laws we need.

Sometimes I think some of these "so often" events are connected.......

Need I say more ? Read my mind.

It's *** disgusting, seems every other day there is a damn shooting. Makes you wonder if it is safe anymore
to study.

I have a better idea.......ban school altogether and have people learn in sequestered facilities
with tightened security under close guard from non government affiliated sources.......
Or better yet study at home........ :)

When I read your initial post I knew you were referring to the shooting.

Adopting Spirituality in day to day life is the only solution for this trend.

My view:
Furthering Education / Education in Harmony:
Practicing spirituality as a hobby to pave way for posterity:

Well, in today’s world of materialistic living, people are in danger of developing stress, depression and mental illness. Growing research suggests that religion and spirituality help people better cope up with the ever increasing psychological maladies. Spirituality is not about becoming a saint. For people like us, it is the way of living this worldly existence with peace and purpose. We have come to this world empty handed and will leave this world empty handed. Whatever we acquire in-between doesn’t have any effect on our inside; but knowledge does effect in our mind and soul. Spiritual growth helps in realizing the happiness from inside not from outside. Practicing spirituality as a hobby is beneficial for the couple, the family and the society. Technically, spirituality should begin from the couple as they are the source for molding the future generation by following ancestor’s greatness, saint’s nobleness, preserving nature, understanding the importance of places of worship and its upkeep.

There is plenty of reading material available to ignite the thought process on spirituality. There is no need to follow a particular religion for this. It can be practiced by remaining in our own respective religion. Couples can start reading such thought provoking substances and discuss it between them on regular basis to share the understanding on the depth of their reading. These discussions will help them in understanding each other in a better way. The spiritual practice is just whatever you do that really draws you deeper into who you really are by connecting you with your divine self. As a couple, the thoughts and emotions can be easily and naturally shared with each other as they share an intimate relationship. It helps them to understand and start applying it practically.

When the couple starts practicing spirituality, they will have the feeling that they begin to free themselves from the burden of ever flowing thoughts. Observing nature helps in bringing the mind quiet. Spending time together in quiet atmosphere makes the mind get trained in that direction. Quiet mind without wavering thoughts make the mind stronger. Couples should frequently visit nearby places with natural beauty to calm down mind quickly. Observing and appreciating nature refreshes the mind and prepares for divine intervention. Chanting the glory of God is the next thing to be followed by the couple. Prayers are to be continued whenever possible to keep our mind occupied irrespective of our location. There should not be a feeling of “I” or “we” doing the prayer for seeking any worldly thing; it is HE who makes us pray for our own salvation.

Making the mind quiet and chanting prayers should be made as a habit on a regular day to day basis while carrying out one’s duties and responsibilities. Couples should create this atmosphere for their children as well. Sharing the daily chores of the house equally with the family members and making every individual contribute to the upkeep of the family automatically makes the space for spiritual growth of the whole family. Like the saying “Charity begins at home”, spirituality also begins at home. The natural way of love and care for each other helps is building a responsible society contributing to the humankind. Couples should infuse this feeling in the next generation and behave as a role model.
The couple should also make it a point to frequently visit religious places of worship. Those divine places give an immense feeling of connecting ourselves with the Almighty God. It is always better to read and understand about the greatness of the divine place before visiting. Knowing fully about the place, make the visit enjoyable and help in observing the intricacies of the art and the divinity fully. Those places are to be preserved and we play an important role in handing them over intact to the future generations.

Reading books on famous saints and holy avatars make us understand on their blessings to humankind. Having a fair amount of knowledge about them automatically make us follow their greatness to some extent in our life too. Couple should encourage their children to read them as these are the basic fundamental things that has to be passed on to the next generation.

So, practicing spirituality as a hobby will help in giving inner bliss to the future generation. The onus is on us and we should do it willingly from our heart.

I think parenting is the biggest issue.

Years ago, only one parent worked outside the home, usually the father.
The mother stayed home, made sure the kids and the house were in order.
Parents taught their children respect for their elders, how to stand up for
yourself without being a cry baby if bullied.

Being punished at school and/or at home, meant something. It was truly
a gut wrenching experience when you were punished. In our household,
it was butt wrenching experience too!

Today if a kid is spanked, it is looked at as abuse. Spare the rod, spoil
the child.

;) Unfortunately, spoiling a child ( to a certain point of age ) can backfire ( one way or another ) -- though, I have to agree that on hand, it still goes down to the presence of the parents and how they are to their children
