Sad to hear
he was a pioneer after all in the PC security field. I remember running his av overnight in my little 286 clone, scared by the damned "dropper" virus that pulled the characters down the screen when I had some 1-2-3 macros to write for accounting class presentation. Along with Peter Norton's, his was the most widely
used pirated programs that saved many a college freshmen those days.
Sometimes I wonder why bright people turn to unusual paths in life (another one - Phil Katz of the Zip fame - wasted his life through alcohol, and the creator of reiserfs murdered his wife). Unbearable solitary stress, perhaps, without the benefits of spiritual comfort enjoyed by e.g. Larry Wall.
I hope he finds solace for the rest of his life. As for the arrest, well DUI and guns are not exactly rare these days, especially in a state known for its "pop 361" firewater and Beretta poppers - the judge won't be too severe I'd guess.
