Before I moved in October, I had free internet that was included in my rent. Now I pay $43 including tax/modem for 15 mbps of high speed internet through a cable company.

I don't like paying this much!

Do I really need 15 mbps to look at ads, complete surveys, watch videos and maybe watch a soap opera a couple times a month or a movie once a month on You Tube?

I just went with what a friend's son told me, as he's a techie.

It's a shame how much we have to pay for such services!

Any insight would be appreciated. I suppose I'm stuck shelling out the dough lol.

15mbps is required for streaming video at high def, so he hasn't just plucked a number out of the air.

If you just want standard def, you can get away with 3.5mbps. DVD, I'm not sure off the top of my head, but I think you need 10mbps.

So, it depends on the quality of the video you're streaming - but he's probably right.

Well, actually $43 a month isn't bad at all.

I figure I get off pretty good and I hate paying what I pay but it's a lot less than what
many pay. In addition, I live in a rural area, just lucky I live not far from a rural school.

My landline is about $10 a month. My internet service DSL is about $50 per month.
The total bill is about $80+ per month......that's because they nickel dime me on various
tax's.

Come to Romania, here I have 1 Gbps, that's like 125 MB/s download speed, for only 15$ per month, also we get free installation and free gigabit wireless router

Of course, salaries are higher in US but 43$ for 15 Mbps is really to much

Here in Aust I'm paying AUD$90 for 25 Gig, that's reasonable value.

Here in Nigeria, I pay roughly about $32 for 20Gb/month. I believe this is reasonable.

I'm paying about $15 for 4 Mbps (R$ 60 in local currency). With $43, is possible to get a 100 Mbps optical fiber, but only in wealthy neighborhoods which is not my case.

I pay $85 for 40mpbs. This includes a landline connection that they force me to have, even though I haven't owned an actual landline phone since 1998. This is high, even for the UK, but there's only a single provider for the entire village. Even BT can deliver DSL to the exchange, but has nothing in the last mile.

I don't need that sort of speed - 90% of my time is spent in a terminal transmitting text, and the rest at Clixsense or KoL, the little downloading I do, I do overnight anyway - but my only options are fibre or dial up.

Yeah, I am pretty much in the same boat. I only have the landline because I have DSL
and without the landline, I can't get DSL. They are the only provider in my area. My
only other option would be satellite. I do have DISH but the reality is, their satellite wouldn't
be as good as I have now and it would cost more.

My only real complaint is the upload speed. It is extremely slow.

No, I can only get DSL by way of the phone company here.

Comcast aka Xfinity charges $70+ a month for 50 mpbs. That is their slowest speed other then the "economy basic" which is 10. Have no options as they have a monopoly on bandwidth usage. I use about 100 gigs a month so the small data cap other companies have make it impossible for me to be their customer.

This is for the internet only. I bought my own modem saving their $12 a month fee for that. They tend to make modems obsolete after a few years forcing consumers to buy a new one but its still cheaper then $12 a month to buy your own.
