It truly is Fimbulvetr...

I shan't pray, because my Gods are metaphorical - but I did throw some money at MSF India.

Hi Valerie

Check this it is in today's news

Teams of the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), army, navy and commandos of police and fire service personnel were deployed for rescue and relief works in the worst-affected areas of Kotturpuram, Jafferkhanpet and Nandanam on the banks of the Adyar river that has been in spate for the last two days.

Chief Minister Jayalaliathaa is likely to make an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas of Chennai and its suburbs and the neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram.

Milk and other essentials like vegetables are in short supply. A half-litre packet of milk was being sold at Rs.50 in many areas.

Diesel and petrol are in short supply and there are long queues of motorists at the few number of petrol pumps that supply them.

Over 50,000 people have been rescued

He said over 100 boats, 22 divers, 445 life jackets and 328 buoys have been pressed in by the force and more such rescue items are being dispatched.

The Airport Authority of India had late last night announced that Chennai airport will remain shut till December 6 in the wake of the downpour and predictions of more rains.

The death toll in the rains that have lashed the city and other parts of state has gone up to 197, officials said.

All modes of transport--air, road and rail services-- have been hit due to the unprecedented deluge, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at the airport and various rail terminals.

Hope this proof of news is enough

That sounds very bad and of course, very sad too.

I don't know if it is because we have world news now and internet but I really think
the weather disasters are worse and more frequent than in recorded history.

The situation in Chennai is terrible. Many parts of Chennai and its suburbs are flooded after two days of heavy and continuous rain. Flight operations have been indefinitely suspended at the airport, trains have been cancelled and the army is helping rescue stranded people.

Although the NDRF, army ,navy and other rescue personnel are rescuing people from areas that badly hit by the disaster, it is still difficult for people to leave the city as most of the highways in and out of the city are blocked due to the flood. Rescued people are getting bottle-necked into areas that are less affected.

Food and drinking water scarcity is threatening the people who are able to stay at home. Cellular networks are also affected in many places and one of my friend's father has recharge his mobile in his car everyday as there is no electricity. Well this is the case of people who have homes and just think of the hundreds of homeless people.

Please pray for the people and lets just hope the floods subside and life returns to normal at the soonest.

Yes, Chennai has been hit by unprecedented rain resulting in the terrible flood condition the city is in now.

Hope & pray the rain lessens and the water subsides & life returns to normal there. Though it would take more than efforts to recover from the crisis.

It's just a lesson..and warning !

We should not judge the nature easily..

It was not an natural disaster.. it could be controlled if the prior alert been given before opening the excess water, if we cleaned the lake, canals, river & other water sources.

IT'S NOT FOR CHENNAI ALONE... IT'S A HUGE WARNING TO ALL OVER THE WORLD. !

We at Chennai, suffered now... It will be repeated, unless we save our nature.

Good thing is, it integrated most of the people, apart from religion, caste, state, country...

ALWAYS NATURE WINS !!

Services are resuming now... Chennai will be back with a bang soon. :)

A big salute to .... volunteers who saved many people, serving food, shelter, dresses, basic needs etc..,...still they're into their service.. like our army, navy.

Regards,
Rajesh
Chennai.

I hadn't heard about this ==but read all about it here. It is great to hear things are getting back to normal. I pray for peace and comfort for those who lost Loved ones. Tragedies do seem to bring people together for good.
