Yep, my check is late getting here, too. Being the Christmas season, it's understandable (although in my own experience, it's really never been late before).
As far as UPS is concerned, here in Colorado...they suck eggs. Nothing but trouble, plus they tend to toss the packages (not place them) and never ring the bell. I just this past week experienced an "on time delivery-package out for delivery" and got nothing...3 days straight. Amazon issued a goodwill refund, and got me what I ordered here yesterday (Sunday). It's the 4th mess up in a couple of years just to this house. Many neighbors have complained, too. We watched the trucks and the delivery peeps for 3 days, waiting. It was supposed to be on the truck, but never made it past the station. They never fessed up, either. But Amazon sure did a lot of apologies after investigating. We do seem to have better luck with the post office deliveries (and they're actually a LOT nicer here then UPS).
Once, a few years ago, a friend sent a beautiful Omaha Steaks birthday package to me. UPS delivered it to the same number address, two streets over. Unfortunately, the people living there decided to keep and eat most of the goodies, until our neighbor questioned them. They stuffed what was left in the package, re-taped it, and left it on our porch, and took off. My friend contacted Omaha Steaks AND UPS. UPS offered no apologies, Omaha sent another package with EXTRA goodies in it, free of charge, and sent my friend a really great extra discount. Shows class and great customer service when things like that happens.
But really, it's like Valerie said, luck of the draw for the most part during holidays.
