A super-mega-hybrid that started life as a stage 2 Gentoo, but became increasingly Debianised as I discovered I can't live without apt, and then became Mintised as I realised I can't live without apt, but I'd like more up to date libraries than Debian provide. Presently, I can use the Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and Gentoo repos with clever use of chroots, as well as Windows software via WINE, Playstation, NES, SNES, MegaDrive, Amstrad CPC, C64, Atari 2600, Atari Lynx, Amiga 500 and, well pretty much anything really via MESS.

I think the technical term for it is "a bit of a mess".

Who? I'll assume you mean me since you liked my post....

It's the laptop. The Desktop is a work machine only. That's Debian stable, plus DotDeb (because Debian Nginx is always way out of date, even in backports). Plus, a laptop is easier to plug into the telly, since it's portable.

The mutliple distros thing is more a bug than a feature. The multiple systems thing is definitely a feature. You don't have to make it as complicated as I did though - just setting up the emulators, and then adding a custom mimetype instead of relying on file is all you need to do.

Just to clarify,
So you are using Debian on desktop and Linux on Laptop and use emulators for flash support etc..
Not fully understood your post though..

Yes, I'm using Debian Linux on the desktop, and a mishmash of different versions of Linux on the laptop with compatibility layers and emulators.

There is native support for flash in Linux though - see the instructions in the other thread.

What makes Ubuntu good is proprietary drivers and firmware. It's all well and good us sulking about Ubuntu being a poor open source citizen, it's poor choices of desktop, etc, and being all religious about free as in freedom, but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things - if your WIFI and your video card don't work, you're not staying. Until Mint, Ubuntu was the only choice.

I'm not a fan, not by a long way - but I am a realist. Most people who start on Ubuntu end up on Debian proper eventually anyway.
