Update: Fields w/ pre-populated text 2016-12-02 18:58:31 UTC, Kristen Hohenstein
Hello Dear Testers. Recently the question over what to do when you encounter a field pre-populated with text has caused quite a stir!
We originally told you, "If you're asked to enter information into a field that already has text in it, you should report the step if the instructions don't mention erasing text that's already in the field." But then cases popped up where it didn’t make sense to report! For example, you might be asked to fill out a field with your first name, and the field has “First name” written in grey indicating that that’s where you’re supposed to enter your information. That’s a common feature of online forms, and the test author should not need to specifically state that it needs to be erased before a tester enters their name.
Due to the nature of this test case, we’re changing our official answer: You should NOT report a step due to pre-populated text that a test author doesn't specifically tell you to erase. You should erase the text and enter the information laid out in the instructions.` In order to reduce tester confusion, we feel this is a better decision than making a distinction between what type of pre-populated text you should or should not report. So just to further clarify: any time you're asked to enter information into a field but there is already text in the field, erase the text, enter your text, and proceed with testing.
We apologize for the stress this has caused and we thank you for hanging there. Happy Friday and Happy Testing <3
