#13 my lucky number.
But, I had to fight to keep my #13
Back in high school on the baseball team.
Coach was handing out the uniforms.
I was a pitcher on the team, it wasn't my turn to pitch that day.
Well, one of my team mates asked if I would trade numbers, I declined
to trade and said, I like #13, well so did he.
This guy goes and wines to the starting pitcher, now he is taller than I,
think he stood about 6'1 / 6'2
He approached me, telling and demanding that I give up that #13 jersey
so what's his name could wear it.
Well, that went over like a lead balloon, him telling me what I better do.
Told him, not going to happen. I'm going to wear that #13 and if you want it,
you're going to have to take it from me.
Well, the starting pitcher thought he had the right stuff, he found out the hard way.
On the football team, he was the starting quarterback, I was the best starting linebacker.
Anyway, he got in my face, my back against the lockers. We had these old time style
lockers made out of 2 x 4's and screen wire for the bottom and the sides in the field house.
He stepped up to me with his long arms and took a swing, I watched that fist coming at me,
I leaned back into my locker and his swing missed me.
I gave him a punch in the gut, then picked him up and over my shoulder and I parked him
head first going down in my locker. I unloaded that dead weight all in my locker area.
Then I walked out of the field house on to the baseball field.
Needlessly to say, the starting pitcher had a bad day. The other team was hitting his pitches
all during the game.
Now, we get down to the last inning, our team is batting.
It's 9th inning, the score is 5 to 3 and the other team is winning.
Our coach gets this crazy idea in the bottom of the 9th with the score 5 to 3 and down by two runs and one out.
There are 3 of us on on the bench.
The coach comes over, said ok, you three get ready, you and you and me in that order will be the next batters
The first two YOU's ( batter 1 and batter 2 from the bench ) hits two line drive singles to left field.
I've always been a fast and hard to hit pitcher and a power hitter.
I step up to plate.
Thought, oh boy, the pressure on me now.
The first two pitches come in and I swing to kill the ball and I miss the pitch.
Unfortunately our field had no outfield fence, so only way to hit a home run was to be a in the
park home run.
That next pitch come in, I swing that bat and make contact. That ball takes off to the sky toward
center field, then it changes to a new direction and curves right between center and right field,
That ball was so high and long, I rounded 2nd base before the ball ever hit the ground.
I stopped on 3rd base, I may of been able to make it too home plate, don't know. I was too busy
to get to 3rd and didn't want to slow up, too look back to see where the ball was and no one
was yelling to round the base to come on home.
My triple tied the game....
Next batter steps up, hits a long fly ball to left field....
I tag up and off to home plate.
That outfielder had one heck of arm.....
When I tagged up to run to home plate, I figured it was going to be an easy shoe in to score
the winning run.
I got about 4 or 5 steps from the catcher and her comes the ball from the outfield, as I'm running
and nearing the catcher, he comes the ball to my left.........
I thought oh ****ellll what I'm going to do now........
I'm this close to home plate to win the game.......
I certainly don't want to get in the hot box... that never works out too good......
Split second thinking.............
I'm already full steam, time to play some football.......
That outfielders throw was dead on the money, from the distance he threw and
to the home plate would of been a strike over the plate.
That pitcher caught the ball and as he turned toward me, I came rolled in like a freight train
and that forearm knocked the ball out of glove and across the plate I go.
As I took out the barrier at the plate, it wasn't over yet.
Not enough distance to put on the brakes to slow up before coming up on back stop fence.
I couldn't throw myself into the fence for the fence bar going across, that would really hurt.
The other option was to hit the ground before the fence and go tumbling to the fence.
I hit the lower portion of the fence, just under the fence bar going across.
Long story short, we won the game.
That #13 jersey had a big day.
Fight before the game.
Big challenge on the end of the game.
