Okay.

So I had started to doubt whether these two sentences were proper English and meant the same:

Previously I made $20, I don't any more.

I used to make $20, but I don't any more.

But on second thoughts, and freakingout aside, I guess that the English I've been taught and the English I'm supposed to teach to kids can't be absolute crap.

Actually, neither of those are correct. Neither make sense. Here is why:

I don't any more, previously I made $20.

But I don't any more, I used to make $20.

You can't begin a sentence with a 'But' and therefore you can't have a coma before a 'but'.

Remove the coma from yours and it will come more to making sense.

Neither? Oh my, but it was you who set the first one as an example of proper English!

Hmm, you can actually have a coma before a "but" if "but" is at the beginning of an independent clause, so you're right when suggesting that I remove the coma from my example... unless I turned the second part into an independent clause too.

As for beginning a sentence with "But", not to contradict a native for no reason, but there are many instances where it's correct to do so. This link provides with a good explanation on this issue, in case you wish to take a look:

This is exactly what I mean by this topic. Now you folks can make lite of it if you want to.
However, I was simply trying to help. ClixSense is a USA based program with USA English
speaking owners and support. Often this simple little ditty can be so misunderstood that
it causes these members to lose time or lose money. You may not notice it. You may not
realize it. I have been here for ten years and I see it frequently and have for ten years.

Hi Valerie really appreciate what you were trying to explain to all others members other than US people that small grammar mistake can make clixsense staff ( Which is US) to some other issue/problem than the actual one.
But in the same why you also need to understand if we tell you to start interacting in Chinese or Japanese or Hindi even you will make such mistakes cause its not your first language.
Hope you get the point
Again we all really appreciate your concern and we all love you for your guidance/advice provided all the time.

Just for the record, and since that's what you've posted right after my latest post, I never doubted that you were trying to help, nor did I mean to spoil your thread. On the contrary, I found this chat about English grammar quite interesting, as it's something directly linked to my job, and thought it was right to exchange some views... I guess I'll eventually learn that some things never change. Thanks for your time, anyway.

Can't say I didn't try.

PS. Just for the record, If I was in a program based in another country, I would understand
their language or at least enough of it so I would get my justified earnings.
