I don´t know if I should post this kind of debates, but I couldn't find anything on the forum rules about these kind of topics. So lets start it!

Is it right to be proud of a country? You may say that it's a normal thing but can´t this lead to discrimination? Is it okay saying that I'm proud of being white?
In Euro 2016, lots of fights happened because everyone was teasing each other. For what? What did they want to prove to the others?
You can say "Each person should be proud of their country because of the accomplishments", but great part of those accomplishments were thanks to stealing territories, resources, and killing inhabitants. Should we be proud of that?

In my opinion the only case where we should be proud is when we fight against our fears, our struggles and make something that we thought would be impossible. We should never be proud of beating someone in a competition.

I hope we can have some kind of a debate, everyone respect each other without starting conflicts. :)

I don't think a country is a sensible thing to be proud of. I do think it's perfectly sensible to be proud of being part of a subculture - though perhaps proud is the wrong word.

Never ask a man if he's from Yorkshire. If he isn't, you'll embarrass him. If he is, he'll have already told you.

I happen to be a stereotypical Yorkshireman, so a sense of national and personal pride happen to be the same thing for me...but it is about subculture. Just because you're born in Yorkshire doesn't mean I consider you a Yorkshireman, and on the other side, there are plenty of people born outside of Yorkshire I happily consider honorary Yorkshiremen.

In fact, over recent years, I've been calling myself a Yorkshireman less and less, and calling myself a Dane instead, because the subculture that's important to me are the traditions passed down from our Danish Viking ancestors. The heathen traditions, the Old Norse dialect, the Havamal based outlook on life. Which shows the fluidity. I might say I'm proud to be from Yorkshire, but that's not what I really mean - the thing I'm proud of is much more specific.

I think it's just about respect and that is all.

Of course bodies of land were taken, either by peace or by war. That is no reason not to have
respect for your country.

People seem to like drop down menu's for everything. I don't agree with that. That causes
confusion and too much thought. Too much thought makes my head hurt.

Who are people? Does it really matter what color they are? There's some old classic movies....
well, they are old classic movies now......but I think my watching those movies taught me more
than a book on the subject or racism, prejudice, bias, etc. The movies are:

Hell in The Pacific - came out in 1968
and
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - 1967

Those two movies showed me that respect and love is not bias, does not care about color,
has no place for prejudice, and does not welcome racism. They helped me to understand
about life, love, war, and how even the most hated people against each other, can become
the most loved of each other.

People are never going to learn, I fear. Not everyone knows what respect is and the worse
part is not having self respect. If you don't have self respect, you don't have anything.

I think people should respect there country if their country is respectful of humanity.

I have two legs, two arms, two eyes, and fortunately they all work. I was born on planet
earth. That is all. That is all there is.

I am proud to be an Englishman but not so proud of our past, I'm actually more proud to be a Scouser, yes we take a lot of stick but we are humble and funny and tend to get on with most people, years ago when we were part of Lancashire there was great rivalry with our Yorkshire friends but not anymore.
We are a football mad city and just for the record i support Everton but i went wrong somewhere cause my son supports Liverpool lol!

Think your son has got it right TutFreak, only joking, i'm an avid Bradford City fan, remember when we hammered you at Goodison in the F.A Cup.
Your're right about the rivalry between Yorks and Lancs, somehow Yorks and Merseyside just does not have the same ring about it.

do you have an exemple to show us of what you call "nasty"

"20 minutes" jornal said that Portugal was nasty/disgusting the way they reached the quarter-finals. Then a DJ said that "**** you Portugal, use your hands to build houses, not to play football"

One and only one has published a controversal title and corrected the title some hours after. Are you considering because one journal says something it is the general opinion of the population ? Medias are ready to publish any sh*t to get the audience. Even lies
A DJ is not a media by the way, if he says **** you, then what ? everybody can have his own opinion. Agree or not is another thing.

What about for exemple when Cristiano was insulting his team, it was one the news as well. What is your opinion ?

I was never a fan of Ronaldo, he thinks just because he knows how to kick a ball, he is more important than anyone. Ibrahimovic called France "s***", because he thinks he is superior than the others.
Look, I'm not defending my country, the idea of my topic was to discuss about pride and how can lead to conflicts.
Accordingly with merriam-webster dictionary,

Simple Definition of pride

a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people

a feeling that you are more important or better than other people

a feeling of happiness that you get when you or someone you know does something good, difficult, etc.

I have to say that if we continue to compete to each other to know who is the best in the world, we will eventually destroy ourselves (humankind). We must cooperate with each other, respect each other, and put differences aside. There is lot of pollution, our world is becoming overpopulated, there is already nuclear weapons, etc.

edit: forgot to mention that portugueses when they heard about what the journalist of "20 minutes" said, threatened him with death.
