Countdown to 7 Billion

Locked

The world population is projected to hit a whopping 7 billion by the end of this month, and researchers suggest it could reach 10 billion within the next century. On the one hand, this means we're a great success — after all, the goal of any species is to expand and conquer. But, on the other hand, all that expansion means more mouths to feed, which requires more space and energy, which increases the demand on resources and the environment, perhaps too large a demand for Earth to support.

How can we curb this growth? Should there be a global one-child policy, like the one enforced in China?

I don't know. I always kind of think it will take care of itself.

Natural disasters seem to be more and more prominent today.

There's the crazy wars in which people kill each other and they don't even know what for.

Disease is always a biggie. Although health care has come a long way, I am wondering
how much longer people will be able to afford it. Then of course, there seems to always
be another disease or virus lurking around the corner.

This is how fast We go

The 21st century is not yet a 16 years old, and there are already 1 billion more people than in October 1999 — with the outlook for future energy and food supplies looking bleaker than it has for decades. It took humanity until the early 19th century to gain its first billion people; then another 1.5 billion followed over the next century and a half. In just the last 60 years the world's population has gained yet another 4.5 billion. Never before have so many animals of one species anything like our size inhabited the planet.

I agree that there are so many natural disasters and people killing themselves and others with them. If you ask me, I think that society has become so detached from life and has become numb to all of the horrific things going on in this world. If nature doesn't take care of things, you can always count on the self destructive nature of man.
