This year has been a bumper crop for Black Walnuts. I have lots of those trees on my property and I'm drowning in walnuts. They're all over the place. You can't walk without breaking your neck on them. Their price is at an all time high this year. So, I've told local kids they can have them. All they have to do is pick them up and take them to the huller for cash. Not a single kid has jumped on this opportunity and there's at least $150 worth of walnuts sitting in my yard. So why don't kids want to work for some money? When I was a kid, I would have been all over this.

I asked my kid if she'd do it, and she got very excited until she realised I was asking her hypothetically, so she would.

I asked my nephew and he said "nah, I'll just get some money off me dad".

I think that might be the difference. (I do give my kid money - just not much).

My daughter would love doing that, shoot I would do it for that matter. My daughter is 16 is getting her drivers license so started putting in for jobs and no one will hire her, she is getting disgusted now.

I told her the other day to find sites like this one to do online but most of these sites she also has to be 18 to do them.

My grandson is 14 and would do that in a heartbeat. My daughter makes her kids go out and do work for the neighbors and do community service activities. It's all on how kids are raised these days.

I had pecan trees at a previous property I owned back in the 90's and I had two large pecan
trees. I would put plastic down and place bricks on the plastic to hold the plastic down. I'd
do that of course, at the time when the pecans were ready to fall. I would then take them to
a Hickman, Ky to a cracker. It was fun to watch them go into the cracker....rather slow process.

I'd have the entire trunk of my car full, the back seat and floor board full of box's of cracked
nuts.

Fresh walnuts and pecans.....YUM!

This is the place I would take them.....and across the street sat the oldest
african american church in the USA......I heard it burnt down a few years
ago.

Walnuts ................Once upon a time , long , long time ago , all I get for Christmas was few walnuts, and one orange in good year

I didn't have walnuts, just the pecans. One tree would net the large pecans and the
other one had smaller. I would clean all the shells off the pecans and bag them in
freezer zip bags. I worked at a hospital and I would sell them to the doctors, nurses,
office workers, etc. They were expensive back then but today, they are extremely
expensive.

They came in the holiday season and everyone had pecans running out their ears at
my house. I made pecan pies, pecan fudge, pecan cookies....and I would give pecans
as gifts.

Can't pay for the flight but if you row a dinghy about midway here, you should be able to catch a ride for the remainder of the trip on the wind from the hurricane we're having on the East Coast.

Oh my. Fresh pecans, pecan pie, pecan fudge . . . . heaven.

Oh yeah kids today look at my country it seems the only interest they have are expensive scooters,friggin phones,clothing.

And all end up with huge money debt before they even reach their twenties...

Wow! Our black walnut trees aren't giving many this year. The acorns are few and far between, too, and very small. Our mulberry tree - no mulberries either. Don't know what's going on this year. Maybe the heat?

The first year we owned this property I collected all the black walnuts I could, sat and peeled them (wearing gloves of course!), set them in a basket on the patio table. None there the next day. We did the same with the popcorn we grew, but hung them from a fish net from the roof. There was also a lot missing the next day....the culprit? Squirrels. Oh, well. I now let the squirrels have any nut they want, except my husband, of course.

Funny, this year they aren't bothering. Wonder if it has something to do with the feral momma cat and kittens that moved in this summer.

Maybe you know this but maybe you don't.

Nut trees usually do not do well every year. Some years they net a whole lot more than other years.
I'm almost afraid to say because I can't remember really the poundage but it was something like....
the both pecan trees, the best year I had something like 500 pounds. It seemed like they would skip
a year. It made a very big difference. I would say the off year they would net half that amount or less.

Here, the acorns are falling now and they are very small and very white.

I have lots and lots and lots and lots of HICKORY NUTS. I don't know much about those. It's fun to
watch the squirrels eat them.

Have you folks ever watched a squirrel climb a corn stalk and break the corn off the stalk? It is very
hilarious and interesting. I have sat right here from my desk and watched the field across the way when
there is corn planted, squirrels climb the stalk, rip the corn from the stalk, drag it over to my yard, stip
the corn husk off, and eat the corn. Some times If I have a window open, I can here the crack of the
corn coming off the stalk.

oh, i love pecans so much, great taste and they are so healthy.
Somethimes i bay a little bag. They are very expensive.
Unfortunately the trees do not grow by us.
We have different varieties: beech- Hazel- and walnuts in Switzerland sometimes extremely many, so its whas allways really hard work, but fun.
When we were children, all the cousins had to help, afther the scool or the weekends, our grandmother gave us a delicious cake and hot chocolate.
Now, years later I am still collecting, but nor more so much

oh yeah, they are so cute
Our squirrels have unfortunately almost been exterminated.
But the small family eagerly collects the hazelnuts behind the house.
In front our ravens are busy dropping the walnuts from a high altitude onto the road to crack them.
This is every autumn a spectacle
