Anyone know anything about Chrome/OP Systems?

Since I have an antiquated computer, Chrome doesn't support my XP anymore. I've been having a lot of trouble signing in to sites and can't post comments on any site.

My question is: If I uninstall and re-install Chrome, would I lose all the "extras" that were combined with it, like saved passwords, and other things that were set up in Chrome>

Also, I bought Windows 7 to install. If I uninstall my XP, will that affect my setup email and everything else I have set up in XP?

Or will everything still be there? I'm so nervous about doing any of this but can't afford a computer guru to do it for me.

It's not like Linux, you can't just not delete /home and have everything the same. You can't just copy directories over, because Windows is a mess, so how well it works is anyone's guess, but Download Windows Easy Transfer for transferring from Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7 from Official Microsoft Download Center

With the Chrome question, if you uninstall Chrome, you have the option to save passwords, bookmarks etc so that, when you re-install, they can then be imported in again. If you are going to upgrade the OS, then you will need to save your Chrome user data on an external drive/disk (or possibly via the link BR mentioned).

There is no need to upgrade anything, just install Firefox and add all nessesary plugins including the flash plugin and Html plugin as a backup.

I still have Winxp and Firefox and my machine is as efficient as ever and virus free, it wouldn't surprise me if a new type of virus or worm disables all windows 10 Operating systems this year sometime between christmas and new year.
They always target the newest operating systems so i'm safe with winxp.

Despite popular beliefs winxp is still useful and will be for a long time if you know how to manually configure it.

If you are logged in via your Google Account you'll be fine. (you can check if you are logged in by going here: passwords.google.com and looking for your passwords)
Just install Chrome on the new PC, login to Google, and all your data will transfer over.

I installed FireFox many times and it always gave me problems. If it wasn't crashing, it was freezing, or it was losing some of the "extra add-ons I had combined with it. (Sorry, I'm having senior moments today-words aren't coming easy).

I love WinXp. I did look at Windows 7 and it's on my laptop, but I just looked at it. Lots of changes. I don't know why these companies have to force "new and better" (not!) programs on us instead of just adding extras to the old programs that work fine. They could still charge for those upgrades. My virus program does that. It's called nickel and diming me to death but at least they're more affordable and I can pick and choose which pieces of upgrades I want. :D

lol..yeah tell me about it, damn upgrades, we're both stubborn when it comes to upgrading windows. :P
I'm still holding the line of trenches i have dug for my winxp, even dug some fire-trenches just in case those apple people decide to attack from the flanks, plus i have set up some archers too,
i won't surrender winxp without a fight  well then i wish you good fortune with windows 7.

XP is broken in more ways than you can possibly imagine. You've got no idea how much extra work it costs for everyone to support. You're not going to be able to carry on using it forever - as it continues to decline in popularity, people are going to stop doing the extra work, and you're going to have to switch to something else.

But you don't actually care about XP, what you care about is the desktop. I can understand that, I still use KDE 3.5 which came out in 2005, but because in Linux you can choose your desktop, it's an old desktop running on a modern backend....but you can't do that on Windows. You get the desktop you're given and can't choose another....except you sort of can. Maybe try this, and see if it makes things more bearable for you.

XP hasn't been supported for over a year now. Neither has Chrome. I haven't added Windows 7 to my desktop yet because I just don't know if I want to, but thanks for the link. I will probably try it on my laptop.

I did notice on a sidebar that that program was hacked, so I hope it has been fixed.

Better move on to at least Windows 7, XP might not be attractive for hackers but it's vulnerable (Mark my word).

Even Windows 7 has it's problems now with a broken update system and needs manually patching (At least in my case)

Still learning to cope with windows 10 (Ugh) one of my favourites are when opening a simple folder "Wer'e working on it" WOW it usually takes from 5-10 seconds.

And i'm not even mentioning Microsoft's anniversary updates (Horror)

i bought a laptop with windows 10 some months ago, i used it 10-15 minutes and never used again. i am supposed to install GNU/Linux, but each week i say to myself i will do it next week.

This is maybe my favorite desktop environment installed on Ubuntu.... server version
It's not even called desktop environment but window manager

Can't make more simple, right ? I have not even customized to have anything. I need to click right to do something

It works so good, very reactive and fast. And very loooooooooooow ressources used. Less than 100 Mo

Prefer FluxBox to OpenBox myself, though the differences are minor. If you're going for a really minimalist approach though, it's TinyWM you want.

I have an 8 year old Acer desktop and had XP to start out
with it then upgraded to W7 and went to W10 from that
Using Ghrome now instead of years of Firefox. Hesitated
for a long time but happy to have made the switch.
I am just an 81 year old and what I know about computers
is not worth typing on a pin head.So if I can survive all
the changes it should be easy for anyone.

To be honest, I'm much more worried about Google than Microsoft. Google actually releases Linux systems. They might attempt a coup when Linus dies/retires. Microsoft won't.
