Quote from "crime and punishment" movie

Locked

Hi

I saw this movie years ago (the one with crispin glover), and at the end there is a quote saying more or less the following: The man that regrets his sins is more saint than the one that never sinned.

My question is who created this quote? I searched through the internet but in vain.

The closest I can find is this one:

"The sinner who is sorry for his sins is closer to God than the just man who boasts of his good works."

- St. Padre Pio

I would presume "the just man" could be applied to be a person who considers himself to be saintly or pious (not an actual saint).

Is that the quote from the movie? I remember that the quote I wrote is from the end of the movie where raskolnikov is in a Siberian prison.

The movie probably took some artistic/literary license & paraphrased St. Padre Pio's original quote (which would be why you could never find the original author - it would likely be the scriptwriter of director or the movie).

That occurs a lot in films & television shows as it can make it simpler for the audience to understand the meaning of the quote, or make the original quote more relevant to the plot of the movie.

Of course, the quote could also have come from the original author of "Crime and Punishment", Fyodor Dostoevsky, but I couldn't find any quotes attributed to him that use similar words to the ones that you mentioned.

I just found the movie and the quote is the last sentence of the movie, it says this "the man who repentant his sins is holier than the man who has never sinned at all". Thanks for your effort

Glad you found it.

Nothing worse than trying to find a quote where the words are slightly different to the ones you recall. The obsessive-compulsive in me once spent days trying to find a quote from a movie, and I had not just the wrong words - I also had the wrong movie and the wrong actor in my memory. In the end I had to do searches on quotes about the general topic, and the one I was after eventually turned up in one of the lists.

Fyodor did. He is the author and I believe he wrote it in his book.

You would need to know that Fyodor was a Christian but not so devout. He had his sins and struggled with
who he was and what he was and what our purpose is on earth and heaven and hell and God.

There are many similar scriptures in the bible. I have read that Fyodor while in prison, read and studied
the new testament. I have also read that it was not til many years later after prison that his friend in the
military was a strong influence on his belief in God. So who knows. Maybe from the bible, his friend, his
own experience, he came to write that line.

I don't recall the movie but I have read Crime and Punishment and what a read it is! Very long read too.
Great book and WOW what a great Russian Author!
