I find that silence helps me. Switch off the TV & the radio, and remove the distractions. Could be because I have adult ADHD, but I find that interruptions or hearing worrying things in the background makes my stress levels go up.
Avoid watching more than 1 hour of news & current affairs per day. There is rarely anything that makes you feel good on it. I stopped being a news & political junkie a few months ago, and cut my TV news & current affairs viewing down from a couple of hours to about 15 minutes each day. I'll switch the idiot box on for the headlines, & basically watch until the moment a "junk" story comes on (a minor football scandal, reality TV show update masquerading as news, faux outrage). Then off it goes. Try to avoid the news breaks that pop up during shows which you watching to relax. Who wants to hear about death or destruction or politics during a comedy or romantic drama?
Don't read opinion pieces on news sites that are clearly biased towards either the left or the right (I know - it is not easy to find a "neutral" news site these days). They will just make you either frustrated or angry or peeved off.
On Twitter & Facebook, don't subscribe to always-serious people or serial-complainers. Every time you read something that is wrong with their world, your stress levels will go up. If you want to get a fix on what's happening, try the satirical & funny tweeters. A funny comment attached to a serious non-issue can really give you perspective (and a good laugh, which is one of the best ways to reduce your body's stress levels).
Don't let yourself get tired. If you don't sleep well, and if it is possible for you to do, if you wake up after a just a few hours, get up & have a cuppa tea & do something light for an hour or two (such as a couple of ClixSense surveys). Go back to bed, & you should drop off to sleep fairly quickly. Better than lying in bed awake worrying about things.
Finally, about 20 years ago I learned the Serenity Prayer during a difficult time in my life. You do not have to be religious & can change the first word in it to whatever you want - I just change the superior being to "Please". This is the line I always think of when I am concerned that an aspect of my life might be getting out of control:
...grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference...
Also, no coffee within 8 hours of bedtime. The only caffeine I have after 4pm is a cup of tea after dinner. Get some herbal teas instead. One an hour before bedtime will help you wind down for the day. A good night's sleep is one of the best ways to reduce your stress levels, and you will function better overall when you are fully rested.
Hope some of that helps.
P.S. Please don't start posting "neutral" news sites in this topic. Everybody's view is different, and this forum has strict non-political & non-religion rules.
