any natural remedies for a mosquito repellent?

#1 by pindokhan123 » Sun Apr 09, 2017 12:19

i will be flying off back home come end of the month and was wondering if anyone had any homemade remedies or tips to ward off those nasty nasty mosquitos which i wll be facing 24/7 in the scorching, humid weather in Pakistan.

i have tried everything, from creams,sprays,roll-ons,bands,nets,you name it i done it :( but these dreaded nasties always find somewhere which you missed to bite you!
most of the creams and stuff i have tried is only effective for a few hours, then your asleep and the mosquitos start biting again and your up half the night scratching your guts away.

i would appreciate any tips, infact anything that works ,at least until the morning giving me a good nights sleep!
thanks in advance

4 Valium( diazépam) pills should be enough. You won't feel or hear anything.

oh yes i heard about that ,its got a kinda mint smell hasnt it,what they use in vicks vapor rub and decongestants....pretty strong smell that is.
i know mosquitos are attracted to carbon dioxide and warmth,,ie humans! so really you got to hide that meaty smell,,,,really if i'm asking too much i need something that will work for a good 8/10 hrs flat and guarantees no nasty bites.

i remember once i covered every bit of my exposed body ,face hands, feet and ankles with a repellent, everything was ok until one stung me on the nose!
can you believe that? i thought i had it all covered and a mosquito pulls a sly one....desperados for blood they are no doubt if it means scanning you all night for a morsel.

thanks fluffy but the disadvantage with that is they might blow out,coz back there most people tend to sleep on their roofs or balconies coz its much cooler than indoors and candles ,well, the slightest of winds will just blow it away.

mind you the oil sounds ok,maybe i should try Holland and Barret and see what they got to offer

I don't seem to have any problems with mosquito's here and rarely see one.

However, If I go fishing or camping around here, lake areas, there is often mosquito's.

At home, if I sit out on the patio or balcony at night, I light a large citronella candle. It keeps most
any insects at bay. No, they don't really have an odor when lit. If you place your nose up to the candle
when not lit, you can smell the citronella. I can't really describe the aroma but doesn't smell bad to me.
Like I said, once they are lit, you don't really smell anything.

Something kind of new that I really like is the bracelets. Tic's are the worry here for me. Lyme disease.
If I am going to work outside in the leaves, or woods, I like to put the bracelets on my wrists and on my
ankles. They really do work. I've been using them for a few years.

Another product that people swear by and that I used for many years when camping and such is an
'Avon' product called 'Skin So Soft'. We would take a bottle of the SSS oil camping but before that,
I would take a bath and put a capful in my bath water. It works plus you smell real nice in addition
to keeping skin soft.

You can buy the citronella oil. I have some little carrier oil bottles of it and that is not a pleasant
smell because it is the pure oils. You could pour some in an aroma diffuser.

If any of the suggestions in this thread worked, we'd have eradicated malaria by now.

well actually bouldrake i read somewhere that the common housefly carries more disease than a mosquito and people are more prone to getting malaria from a fly.
even drinking infested waters or contaminated food can give you malaria i guess and definitely a mosquito bite too,if your immune system is very weak at the time.

i remember when i had surgery on my leg in 2008,i was bought out from the operating theatre straight into my room, that evening i was bit by a mosquito and had a fever but doctors acted quickly and i was under control,i was very vulnerable then.

I think you may be mixing up cholera (& other bad water bacteria) with malaria, which is a mosquito-borne parasite. A quick search on Google for "can you catch malaria from water" came up with this as the first result:

Quote:No - the malaria parasite is not transmitted via saliva. The malaria parasite can only reproduce in blood and you can't catch it from drinking water. However, dirty water can carry other dangerous diseases, such as yellow fever or typhoid.
