The surprising number of American adults who think chocolate milk comes from brown cows

Quote:Seven percent of all American adults believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows, according to a nationally representative online survey commissioned by the Innovation Center of U.S. Dairy.

If you do the math, that works out to 16.4 million misinformed, milk-drinking people. The equivalent of the population of Pennsylvania (and then some!) does not know that chocolate milk is milk, cocoa and sugar.

For decades, observers in agriculture, nutrition and education have griped that many Americans are basically agriculturally illiterate. They don’t know where food is grown, how it gets to stores — or even, in the case of chocolate milk, what’s in it.

One Department of Agriculture study, commissioned in the early ’90s, found that nearly 1 in 5 adults did not know that hamburgers are made from beef. Many more lacked familiarity with basic farming facts, like how big U.S. farms typically are and what food animals eat.

That's hard for me to believe. Chocolate milk from brown cows? I grew up knowing what regular white milk is, what fresh churned buttermilk is, and how to make my own chocolate milk at home. If you are American, you should know this. You can only blame the parents and the teachers. Wow! I never knew this :( Thanks for sharing this info CroqueMitaine :?

Yeah...In Some parts of America doesnt know about those matters....They have their own mind of thinking or connotations that the chocolates milk they would drink came from a brown cows....lol   ....Oh my...We know around the world the milk we drink always came from a purely natural white color from the cows ..If we are drinking a milk with the color of pink...It is the flavor of( Strawberry ) Then When we are drinking a milk with the color brown...It is the flavor of ( Chocolates )...And A white color of milk ..Its understandable that is a purely natural color of milk came from the cows....But We doesnt blame those american's came from the country of Pennsylvania because They doesnt informed with their respective parents about those matters...And Even on the school where in those teacher's should teach on them about the real natural milk came from a cows....We are aware the educations begins athome where in those kids teach for their respective mom's about the milk they are drinking insides their bottle...so that when they became also a parents....They also imparted their knowledge with their respective children and Next generations at all    ....

We know and Aware there are some manufactured of dairy products that It has exist now.. A different kind of flavor milk in the market so that those consumer's has many varieties of milk they choice....Some of them try any kind of flavor like Chocolates flavor...Strawberry flavor & Natural purely white flavor of milk.. Until They would decides which the dairy product they would drink on it...Like for me...I love for drinking of Strawberry milk flavor because I love the taste and Its delicious ...Besides Strawberry is our favorite fruits with my hubby... :P :P :P

If you notice that the source is from a "nationally representative online survey", it means that used the same kind of survey we answer for money to get the results. So there probably was at least one Clixsense member who answered "Yes" to "Does chocolate milk come from brown cows?", AND they got paid for that! :o

 People were most likely joking around and the survey people took it too seriously. Also, Americans aren't as stupid as some media outlets try to make us.

Luckily I grew up on a farm so know where milk, butter and eggs come from. I also know how to help when it comes calving time. However city folks think milk comes from the store.

i hate to point out the obvious, butttttt. this results came from a survey, now what does this say about the quality of american survey takers? should you really trust poll numbers when this many think a brown cow gives you chocolate milk?

just saying.

then again it could be 7% were just goofing around and didn't care?

Can't blame it on me! I rarely qualify for surveys so don't really make the effort to do any. :)

I'm not an American. But the answer is obviously soy cow, almond cow, and coconut cow.
