Cities with Funny Names

Locked

#1 by valerie » Thu Oct 26, 2017 08:23

I might have to research that some time just for fun.

Actually, I was tracking a shipment and have many times seen this 'Romeoville, IL'.
It's up by Chicago but I had never heard of it. Maybe a newer suburb or something.
I thought it a funny name 'Romeoville' and when I looked it up, seems to be a city
primarily for senior citizens. They also list an event called 'Picklebowl'. Go figure!

Do you know any cities with funny names?

Idiotville, Oregon - A former logging community near Portland that is now a ghost town. Most of the people who used to live there worked at a local logging camp, but it was so far away, locals said they must be idiots to live there.

No Name, Colorado - When Interstate 70 was being built, the developers planned an exit at a then unnamed area, and marked the exit sign "No Name". People who lived there decided to keep that name.

Pity Me, Durham, England - Nobody knows for sure how the town got its game, but some say it was just a whimsical name given to it because it was a geographically difficult place to live. Others say it is derived from the French word "Petit Mere" which means a shallow lake.

Nuttsville, Virginia

There's a couple in Jylland (Denmark) called Tarm and Lem (Actually there's a lot of them)

Tarm in Danish means Gut/Intestine, And lem means basically Willie/pecker.

A couple of months ago there wer'e a soccer match between them, So it was : Gut vs willie ( can't remember who won)

This would never happen in American Football (NFL) :D

How about a small town in Arkansas called Romance. Loads of Valentines are post marked from there every year! Then we have Bald Knob, Snowball, Fifty-Six, Arkadelphia( kinda like Philadelphia) Toad Suck, Frog Level, etc. I'm for real! These are real names of towns(sometimes spots in the road) in Arkansas! We also have plenty of towns named after different places in the world, Rome, Paris, Havanna, Houston, Nashville, Murfreesboro, Prague, etc. We ARE a different world down here! LOL  But then we are cool like that! 8-) 8-)

In Kentucky near Paducah, there are small little towns such as 'Monkeys Eyebrow, Ky and
Possum Trot, Ky. Back when Johnny Carson was still on TV, his band guy 'Doc' mentioned
those funny names after he gone thru there on his way to Paducah for some sort of parade.

I go to Paris often. It's about twenty minute drive. Paris, TN. Several years ago they built
an Eiffel Tower there too. It's also the town where Sunny Melton and his wife worked, works.
He was the nurse that was killed in Vegas and she is an Orthopedic doctor.

Aha! I didn't know what to think about that. It even displays a pickle shape area in green
and I thought it must be something like golf. I really had no idea what it was.

I might look that up on youtube and see if they display some people playing it.

Few from Croatia

Ludbreg – Translation: ‘Crazyhill’ – It is a city in Varaždin county known as the centre of the world. The folk of Ludbreg claim that if you were to spread a map of the world flat, then it is their town which is bang smack in the middle.

Gačice – Translation: ‘Panties’ – Which is in Varaždin county.

Grudnjak – Translation: ‘Bra’ – It is located in the Virovitica – Podravina County.
