Windows 10 UPDATE-DO NOT DO yet.

Locked

#1 by Micshad » Thu May 24, 2018 08:06

Windows message boards were bombarded with complaints after users found that the "restart and install" prompt for the Windows 10 update led to a blank screen with a message saying:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted.

The screen has no icons and a few users were only able to remedy the problem with the help of another PC, a luxury many do not have access to.

This is exactly what happened to my laptop. There are fixes but you need a flash drive with the backup on it.

I need to go back to Windows7 if possible because my update was downloaded when they had the incentive to free upgrade 10 from 7.

They will probably issue another update to fix, although may be difficult if computer does not update to connect .
You should be able to hit F8 on start-up and choose " restore to a previous point"

Updated win 10 2 days ago, And besides it now has a game mode i can't see any changes at all.

Haven't updated it since it came pre-installed with my gaming laptop 3 years ago and only reason i updated it was to make use of net framework 4.7 which wasn't available in earlier versions.

System still goes idle for up to 10 seconds when copying or moving files, And the safely remove hardware and eject media feature still dosn't work.

Windows 10 sucked before updating, And it still sucks after.

Good for gaming and nothing else, Windows 7's OS is way faster at nearly everything.

Well, it's been how long(?) since I posted this warning. I don't know how to get an update to fix it if i don't have any internet. i can't get the internet because all I have is a black screen. I tried F2, F8 and F12. I did the testing and everything is okay.

Since I can't do anything on the laptop and couldn't find any information on "the fix," i have no other choice but take it to a computer repair shop and get an estimate on cost because of my limited income before I allow them to work on it.

Send Microsoft a bill or sue them in small claims. They will pay if not bash them on social media.

I see this update trying to install on my machine but i keep postponing it. There seems to be an indication of an issue with avast antivirus software but opinions differ on that one.
@Micshad - thanks for the info that this is happening, didn't know about it, so thanks for the warning ;)

What i found:

"Last week saw a surge in complaints from users stuck on a black screen after updating to 1803. Some users blamed the issue on Avast antivirus, but the security company denied it was the cause.

However, Microsoft has since confirmed that the issue is caused by a clash between 1803 and Avast antivirus.

The upgrade appears to complete but, after signing in, users running Avast see a blank screen with only the Recycle Bin and a taskbar. Also, the Start menu doesn't function and nor does Task Manager.

The other thing that may occur is that Windows restarts to a 'Choose your keyboard layout' screen and gets stuck from there.

"In cooperation with Avast, Microsoft has identified an element of the Avast Behavior Shield that conflicts with the April 2018 Update, and that may result in this experience," Microsoft notes on its user forum.

"Avast has released an update to prevent this issue from occurring. Once you've restored your system, make sure your Avast antivirus is up to date."

It has also provided instructions for restoring Windows machines affected by that glitch.

The update has also caused devices to freeze when using Chrome, and more black-screen problems on Dell Alienware PCs. Last week Microsoft also released bug fixes for Intel and Toshiba SSDs.
"

---------------
Some more:

"Windows 10 users over the past two days have begun reporting serious glitches after updating to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

As per an account on Reddit, after installing the update the computer appears to boot but then gets stuck with a black screen and no icons. There's also an error message that the Desktop file could not be accessed.

Users on Microsoft's forums have been reporting similar black-screen problems since May 14 after updating to the latest version of Windows 10. However, more reports have flowed in over the past two days.

"Tried the update on my Dell and all I got was a black screen with a mouse, then on my Asus I get the black desktop screen with only the recycle bin icon," wrote a user on May 22 on another thread.

"On my Dell it just kept restarting, trying to reinstall the software. On the Asus after every restart, it goes back to the setup screen telling me these 'updates help protect you from an online world'."

As per The Register, a US computer-repair firm Computer Cellar has written a post on Reddit blaming the issue on Avast antivirus because a number of users who also run that AV have had the same problems.

Indeed, some Reddit users do claim they were running Avast when they struck problems after updating to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, while others claim to be using AVG, which is owned by Avast.

However, there are also multiple Reddit users who claim not to be running either antivirus and yet are experiencing the same problem.

Avast told the publication it has tested the issue and "don't see any indications this is caused by Avast".

Either way, it's sparked a debate about whether Windows 10's built-in antivirus, Windows Defender, is sufficient protection, or whether consumers need third-party antivirus.

Microsoft has released an OS full of bugs and hopes to patch it like some half-finished pc game on an early release.

They patch and they break, Had the BSOD (Blue screen of death) A couple of days after updating to the newest version 1803.

This has never!! happened to me on win 7 (Not even once), Have to go all the way back to win 2000 and xp for that experience.

Have anyone experienced Microsoft installing game apps on their pc after updating??, Yep!! Thinks it was candy crush and some other crap game.

Win 10 = End of consumer freedom.

Yeah,

I am on an old PC (12 years now)
Upgraded memory to above minimum spec.

If Microsoft would leave me alone with all the "EXTRAS"
pen, touch, people, drive, task view, tablet features not to mention games, stores etc.
Don't forget the Quote "Key logging they do" or upload to Microsoft for "Better user experiance"

All of which seems to need an update at the same time.

I beleive this PC would run better then it ever did. And cheap too, 250 watts.

My beast PC idles at 250 watts.

Maybe I missed a lot of the bugs and glitches due to having only had Win 10 for 3 months or so but I have had almost no bugs since using it....the only major bug I had was that my system would freeze once a day for no apparent reason, however, a recent update solved that issue (not sure if it was a Win 10 issue or a compatibility issue with my SSD that caused the glitch). Other than that, everything has worked perfectly and is a major improvement on previous Windows.....however, I suspect that part of it is down to installing the SSD at the same time and so everything runs much quicker, hence seeming better

I'm having a LOT of bugs with Windows 10, And especially the creator's update (I would recommend not to install it if you like gaming).

It litterely broke all my games installed on my gaming notebook and now they're running like a crippled Donkey, i have the hardware to play all of them on highest seeting but now all of them autodetects my gpu's and cpu to be sufficient for a medium setting (Wer'e talking about a intel i7 6700k and 2x nvidia 980m in sli) There's defenitely something hogging up the system which wasn't there before the update, And i can't find a damn fix for it.

The only thing i can do is to use nvidias control panel to set the graphics manually, It works (Somehow) but damn it makes mu cpu and gpu's heat up to a point where i'm already worried after 30 minutes of playing, I've tried hundreds of things to try and fix it but it must be a damn bug in their latest update.

Other bugs i've encountered : Os goes idle for up to 15 seconds when moving/copying files with message "Wer'e working on it, Takes up to 5 clicks before i hit the right spot on a window so i can drag it, System won't restart and goes idle, BSOD happens from time to time, safely removing of usb devices still dosn't work, Administator icons are sometimes missing on my shortcuts when i boot up and is replaced with a nice little black square instead.

I'm glad you're having few problems with it, But it's still not ok pushing an update in which they know will cause a lot of problems for many of their consumers (Gamer's mostly).

I know i can roll back to a previous version of windows but if i do that i won't be able to use Net Framework 4.7 and if i do it, It will roll all the way back to version 1060 cause it's my first update ever (Blocked their updates with policy group editor for nearly 3 years), if just they would let you chose to roll it back to a version before the creators update where things worked i would give them a thumbs up (But NO!!) that's not possible.

Microsoft's statement a few years ago "We want to be the leading platform for playing pc-games, Well that's not going very well is it?, No!! Microsoft are more interested in their telemetry systems than providing a decent platform for their consumers, YES!! i know "But everyone is doing it" Yes but you have a choice to NOT!! use it or at least minimize the data collecting (That's not a option with win 10).

I'm so fed up with microsoft, And if mac or linux provided a good gaming platform i would have moved long ago.

But at least their UI is somewhat nice to look at, I have 2 laptops with both windows 7 and 10 and compare them daily, No i really can't see win 10 in any way are smoother and quicker than win 7 (Had so few problems with win 7) And i can't say the same thing about win 10 (Unless it's all a dream) ;)

My laptop restarts by itself every 30mins to an hour of usage since the update. Can this be from the update or something else is wrong?

I think your laptop might be overheating ? see if it needs cleaning, like the vent, make sure your laptop gets plenty of air when it's turned on. Also check the Temperature of your CPU. It has nothing to do with the windows update. When my computer doesn't get enough air and the CPU overheats then my computer has the same symptoms due to an air vent or airfan that is dirty/ full of dust.
-----

BTW: I did it ! I updated windows and it's running fine, no shutdowns, no graphic errors, nor any other problems.
But because i hesitated for sooo looong to let windows do an update it took forever to update. And at the end of the update you have to be careful when selecting/choosing the options for windows. I selected the second option to everthing, like, not to send microsoft my data or ip location ect. I also have to mention that i dont use a laptop, i use a PC.

About how much data you send to microsoft i think the option is also available under settings(At least on Win 10 pro).

Yes!! it could very well be your pc overheating that causes it to restart.

This is a very good tool for measuring the temperature of your cpu and gpu. Open Hardware Monitor - Core temp, fan speed and voltages in a free software gadget

It all depends on your hardware and how good the cooling is, If it's a simple/low end cpu i would say max 60 degrees (Depending on how long it stays at that temperature), If it's more advanced like an i3/i5/i7 intel cpu, It should be able to handle 60 to 90 degrees without problems.

I installed it and within two days received one of those weirdo messages where there is lots of beeping and an ominous voice told me I had to call a number for tech support or I'd be reported to the feds. Nice try. I fixed that one myself but I thought you were supposed to have more security with Windows 10.

Nah, you're screwed. You need to go back to 1607, or 1709 depending on which of the recent problems happens to be your problem, or wait for an update. Lots of people are screwed at the minute.

Last update messed up my wifi adapter but $10 bought on Amazon has it connecting much faster so guess it a good thing. Wish Microsoft test things before release as no way to stop the updates on Windows 10. It also broke LAN adapter but I wait buy new one. I know it was update as about time broke said installed new drivers and then tons of error events.

I got 5-6 notebook computers so I able get online but I prefer using my desktop. One the notebooks is gamming one so its way better than my desktop.
