Tojo - refer's to the failure of Tojo's Imperial Japanese Army to reach Darwin (Australia's northernmost city) during WW2, despite heavily bombing it.

Tracy - around 3:30am on Christmas Day, 1974, category 5 tropical cyclone Tracy scored a bulls-eye on Darwin, hitting it with wind speeds up to 240km/h (150mph). The city was devastated & a huge airlift evacuated most residents over coming days/weeks.

A song was later written called Santa Never Made It Into Darwin. When I was living in Darwin in 1986, it was clear that the locals who had returned & rebuilt after the cyclone really hated that song for making them look like helpless victims. The Hoodoo Gurus decided to right a wrong by penning a song that was much more positive about Darwin's resilience.

There was another Brit band going around at the same time as Supertramp called Supercharge. Very different though. My older brother bought the cassette tape with this song on it. Every time any of our friends came over we had to play this song for them:

In 1975 on Saturday mornings here in Sydney there was a 3 hour music video show on Channel 7 called "Sound Unlimited" (later renamed "Sounds"). It was hosted by Donnie Sutherland, a former horse jockey who had became a disc jockey. Anyway, one song that was played almost every weekend in the early days was Supertramp's "Dreamer". I fell in love with the song straight away.

I'm pretty sure the clip back then was set on stage in a concert setting - fairly dark, and they all had beards. I can't seem to find that original clip on YouTube - maybe there is some copyright issue, but I fortunately found a really good quality studio clip for the song. Interesting to see some of the instruments they used - including crystal wine glasses (where the finger is rubbed around the rim to get a high-pitched sound).

In some ways a sad song, because the extremely talented singer-songwriter, James Freud, showed prescience with the lyrics:

He took his own life in 2010 after battling the bottle for most of his adult life.

But he lives on through his songs.

Just replaced my prepaid Samsung Galaxy Young 2 with a prepaid ZTE Zip. I don't like big phones - much prefer something that fits easily in my shirt pocket.

Here in Australia you get 4 weeks annual leave per year. Plus paid sick, maternity & parental leave, public holidays & long service leave.

When I worked on the payroll for a government department, one of my workers retired after 48 years of service. He wasn't a big holiday-taker as he was often on-call, and I remember his final pay packet which contained his accumulated annual & long-service leave was close to two year's worth of wages.

Alexander Fleming may have discovered the world's first antibiotic, penicillin, but it was the team at Oxford University led by Howard Florey a decade later which worked out how to actually use it, and also how to mass produce it. Not only did it help the allies win WW2 by enabling sick or injured soldiers to survive their injuries/illnesses & return to the battle sooner, it has saved many millions of lives since then.

Florey, his Oxford colleague Ernst Chain, and Alexander Fleming shared the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945.

We've got great quality tap water - some say it is the best in the world, and I won't argue with them.

There are 15 dams supplying Sydney, but the problem is the dams have to be able to hold enough water to go more than 10 years without significant rain to replenish them. Very few cities in the world need that amount of water stored. We have also built a desalination plant since the last drought just-in-case.

Australia actually has the most water stored per person in the world, but we are also the driest continent in the world.

The Millennium Drought was a wake-up call though. My landlord fitted water-saving faucets & shower heads to all apartments, and I have a dual-flush toilet to cut water usage.

Though I did have a go at the gardeners of my building recently for planting non-native plants that need frequent watering. Told them to plant local species that can last for months without watering. Some people just have no idea...
