Have you updated your browser, and the respective plug-ins ( such as Adobe Flash for IE and Non-IE browsers )? There would be cases that aside from a slow internet connection, plug-ins and add-ons that are not updated tend to slow down one's system -- it would be best to see, and maintain that your plug-ins & add-ons are up-to-date

Aside from that, try to check if you have a good anti-virus and anti-malware program installed in your system -- this should be updated constantly ( daily ) on either automatic or manual updating, and that you have to make it a habit to scan your system everyday ( that is, after you go online and log out of your account -- unplug your connection and start scanning, one program at a time )

And, as a last personal check -- try to defrag your system at least once or twice a month ( a full defrag every day is not good for your hard drive -- it'll actually cause more harm doing so -- try to defrag on the end of a month ) and clean your system with Piriform CCleaner ( you can download it from the publisher's site or your favorite downloading hub; it's default settings after installing it are good, so no need to tweak it )

What I do is:

(1) find an old earphone jack that doesn't work, and cut the connecting end section out with pliers -- keep that plug-end ready

(2) insert the plug into the audio jack of my gear ( laptop / desktop )*

*if a plug is inserted into the audio port, it'll switch to that and avoid using the speakers

(3) Now, enjoy the peaceful quietness of it all while surfing, or doing something else
