The simplest answer would be -- exposure

Many of the members have been exposing their affiliate link/s to many of potential sites that provide visitor traffic, thus they are able to gather ( in time ) their refferals -- some would take weeks, others even longer

Creating on social networking sites, or blogs would give you the exposure that you need as well -- you can present your affiliate link to any potential visitor, and given time that visitor can ( and might ) become your referral
