To be honest, I'm much more worried about Google than Microsoft. Google actually releases Linux systems. They might attempt a coup when Linus dies/retires. Microsoft won't.

Moderated chat is pointless. What's the point of a chat room where vitriolic assassination isn't the order of the day?

Really, all you need is a contact based chat, which is self-moderating (you can only chat with people who allowed you to add them as a contact), which can be done easily with WebRTC or outsourcing the problem by just not hiding the profiles built into the software and letting people list contacts as they see fit.

I'd travel to that UN meeting last week, where the leaders of every nation on earth all got together and agree to disarm the military, and bring about world peace.

I'd sabotage something in the build up to ensure it never happened.

If we're going to have a foray into the virtues, or lack thereof, of drugs an alcohol, I should remind everybody not to do calculus when intoxicated. Everyone knows it's bad to drink and derive.

The worst invention, that's easy.

The universe.

Whoever invented that should be shot.

CatMonster wrote: Isn't the "best invention" based on the point of view ? For example, the best invention is the "Tea bag" but for someone else the best invention are household "slippers". So there are no real best inventions if you think about it.
A best invention will always be out done by another best invention, it's like that russion egg that reveals another egg after you opened it.
One could even argue that the nuclear weapon prevents world wars on a big scale since everyone is to scared to use them and to scared to risk their armies or their economy, so maybe the nuclear missile is the best invention ever as funny as that sounds.
Another example, best invention was "COMMODORE 64" until "ATARI" until "Nintendo" until "Super Nintendo" until "Xbox 360" until "Xbox one" until "Xbox one s", so as one can see there are no best inventions, same goes for everything else that people consider to the best, like best food or best music ect., one will always be outdone by the other.
Just like Stormtroopers outdone by chewbacca outdone by vader outdone by luke outdone by disney 8-)

Tea bags are not a great invention. They're an acceptable substitute for proper tea solely because B&M Bargains don't sell loose tea, and I haven't got very much money.

Russian dolls are a good invention because of the nomenclature. They're called Babushka dolls over here to give them a foreign sounding name, but that means "old woman" or "grandmother", which isn't exactly respecting your elders. They're really called Matryoshka dolls. It's like the Mousaka post in the other thread, only we've gone down the rabbit hole.

The Commodore 64 was inferior to the Amstrad CPC, and the Xbox is just awful. I'll give you the Atari and Nintendo.

Quite.

Pindokhan's answer irked me at first, because "computers" and "internet" are not a single invention. They're thousands - maybe even millions - of little inventions. The "internet" doesn't even exist as a distinct entity. It's a fuzzy label, like "tall" or "fat". But the more I thought about it, the more I realised it irked me because that happens to be my industry, and any other answer would have equally irked me if I happened to be in that industry.

If somebody had said "cars" and I was a mechanic, for example, I might have been equally irked that they hadn't said "the wheel" or "the internal combustion engine", because "cars" is another fuzzy label, and they're made up of thousands of inventions too.

As Carl Sagan pointed out, if you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.

The lottery.

Any system that encourages the poorest citizens in a society to hand over a portion of their earnings to the richest citizens in a society, completely on purpose, and happy to have made that choice week after week after week is simply brilliant.

No other form of taxation has people positively eager to take part, rushing to pay the bill, and downright happy to pay far more than they actually have to.

Immoral, yes, unethical, yes, but also brilliant.

Prefer FluxBox to OpenBox myself, though the differences are minor. If you're going for a really minimalist approach though, it's TinyWM you want.

Speaking of verbals, people will often complain about being "given a verbal", however, these people are very rarely given verbs. It is far more common for the person complaining of being given a verbal to have actually been given an adjective.

Bayer makes monsanto look like a saint.

You know what fascinates me about that debate? Almost everybody on both sides actually agrees about almost everything, but they're still split into "pro-GM" and "anti-GM" sides, fighting with each other, instead of dealing with the actual enemy.

Nobody really opposes GM. Those who do can simply be educated, or you can take the "fortified" out of the bread and cereal and see how long it takes for them to change their minds. They'll oppose GM though, because Monsato and Bayer are evil - which, let's be honest, they are.

Nobody really blindly supports biotech companies. They don't really think it's okay to add terminator genes where there's low risk of contamination, and they don't really think it's okay to shoot and kill protestors, but they'll defend it to the hill, because at least it's not anti-GM.

In fact, everyone actually agrees that GM is okay, as long as it's safe, tested, and ethical.

I'm mostly put on the "anti" side of the GM debate, but I buy GM, I eat GM. I have a problem with specific GM technologies, and the business practices of some (well, most) biotech companies, but think the science is fine in it's own right.

Those mostly on the "pro" side of the GM debate buy GM, and eat GM. They have a problem with specific GM technologies, and the business practices of some (well, most) biotech companies, but think the science is fine in it's own right.

GM is just the football. It's not the actual issue, but because both sides decide to fight over the ball, the biotech industry gets left alone to play the game by their own rules.

Certainly explains a thing or two.

XP is broken in more ways than you can possibly imagine. You've got no idea how much extra work it costs for everyone to support. You're not going to be able to carry on using it forever - as it continues to decline in popularity, people are going to stop doing the extra work, and you're going to have to switch to something else.

But you don't actually care about XP, what you care about is the desktop. I can understand that, I still use KDE 3.5 which came out in 2005, but because in Linux you can choose your desktop, it's an old desktop running on a modern backend....but you can't do that on Windows. You get the desktop you're given and can't choose another....except you sort of can. Maybe try this, and see if it makes things more bearable for you.
