Shoveling coal into server » Post #2

Tue Oct 18, 2016 02:54 in General Talk

Check for an energy saving sticker. If you haven't got one, you can use any type of coal you like, but if you have a modern computer with energy saving features, you have to use premium Nat King Coal.

Quote:When I have Windows 7 Pro installed and wanted to try Linux as a side boot, how would I go around it? Do I just split my C partition at the moment of Linux installation?

Yes, and no. What you do practically speaking is just choose to install Linux alongside Windows from a graphical menu in the installer. The option will come up on the third or fourth screen - you choose your language, it does a bit of sanity checking, then it asks how you want to proceed, and does it all for you.

What that does under the hood is create a new partition, and format it to EXT4. Linux will be installed in the new partition, and the grub bootloader will be installed, where you'll be given the option of which OS to boot into every time you turn on your PC.

Quote:is this a good version for everything?

It's a good version for desktop PCs and Laptops. It's a LiveCD - it boots Linux before it touches your harddrive, so you can see if it works or not before you try to install it. Note that it runs much slower from a LiveCD than it does once it's installed, so don't be put off by the performance.

Quote:Linux is a little harder at the beginning

I don't think it's harder, it's just different. Teaching somebody completely new to use a computer, they pick up Linux quicker - because app stores are just package managers. They grock the package manager much more easily than they grock hunting down your own driver, and downloading software from random websites.

There is a learning curve - because you're used to the Windows way of doing things - but the important difference between being harder and being different is that you don't have to be any cleverer to use Linux.

Quote:Can you play GSN games and games on Facebook with Linux?

You can play 99% of browser games. Whether or not you can play WebGL games depends on your graphics card (it does on Windows too, but working on one doesn't guarantee it works on the other). If you're playing WebGL games you'll know about it - they (or at least, they're supposed to) put a WebGL logo on the loading screens.

Quote:What I understand so far is that Linux is more virus proof than Windows and defragging and virus protection is really not necessary because Linux takes care of it all. Is that correct, or did I read it wrong?

I've forgotten the number now, but you can count the number of Linux viruses in the wild - there are about thirty of them.

Defragging, on Windows, when you're writing a file, the OS looks for a sector on the disk to place the next chunk, then looks for a sector on the disk to place the next chunk, then looks for a sector on the disk for the next chunk, and so on, so you might have one file in seperate chunks all over the disk. In Liunx, the OS looks for a section of the disk large enough to fit the entire file in one contiguous block. Only if it fails to find a space large enough does it break the file into chunks. Therefore, the disk never becomes defragmented at all, until your disk is nearly full.

You can defrag EXT4, but I've done it once in 16 years, and that was because my disk was 100% full. I completely ran out of space, even to write temporary files.

Quote:So far I didn't see anything about being compatible with Chrome, just FireFox

That's because you've got the question backwards. Chrome is a Linux first browser with a Windows port, not a Windows based browser with a Linux port.

The difference is, of course, when santa sneaks into Children's bedrooms while they're sleeping and does god knows what while he's in there, he's got the parents fooled too.

It depends which games.

I used to dual boot with Windows to play games until about 2005. Every single game I play now works just fine on Linux, and things are improving even more since Steam took an interest...but I also don't play very modern games, so your mileage may vary.

Counter-intuitively, more old Windows software works on Linux than works on modern Windows. It's the newer stuff that may or may not work. Your best bet is to check the WINE app DB for any specific titles you're interested in.

Linux isn't as hard as you think - you use it on your phone without even knowing it's Linux.

And it's free, and you can try it without even installing it, and there are half a dozen regular members of Clixsense who can help you with any problems you have. It might not be what you wanted, but it's cheaper than a new PC. Try this: Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" - Cinnamon (64-bit) - Linux Mint - it's nice and simple for beginners, but close enough to Debian, that you can get help from experts.

Edit, actually, if your PC is ten years old, you might not be 64 bit yet, so try this - same thing, but 32 bit: Linux Mint 18 "Sarah" - Cinnamon (32-bit) - Linux Mint

Do the advertisers have option of the display time » Post #2

Sat Oct 15, 2016 20:43 in General Talk

No, they're published when they're published, and that's it.

It would be technically easy to add such a feature, but it might not be such a good idea...imagine an advertiser who purchases a million hits, but orders them to only show up at a time of day when a dozen people are logged in on average, so I don't know if it's a good idea or not.

I was an Avon lady in the late 90's. Even with the beard, I'd knock on the door, and men should shout their wives and say "The Avon lady's here". There are lots of jobs - polceman, fireman, etc, that only have a masculine term. An Avon lady is one the few jobs that only has a feminine term

I stopped doing it because everyone assumed I was gay. I didn't care anyone thought I was gay, except, any women I happened to like did too, and I still had a sexuality of which to speak back then.

I do have some baseball caps from 1980's cycling teams - but they're the real thing, not store bought replicas so I don't wear them, and they don't count as part of my hat collection.

No, panamas, flat caps, and fezzes are my hats of choice.

My ambition in life is to own a folder panama, but even I can't justify £50 on a hat.

Hats.

I started collecting hats to annoy my mum, and as I got older and had my own child, I started collecting hats to annoy her instead. Over time, I've had to get more and more ridiculous hats to maintain steady levels of embarrassment as they get used to the previous tier.

To be honest, I'm only aware of CORS at all because somebody else fixed one of my bugs a couple of weeks ago.

Dunno, but I looked at the bug tracker after someone else said it worked for them in the other thread, and found this:

`--disable-web-security` works with an empty value for `--user-data-dir` -

chromium -

Monorail

You can probably work around it by adding --disable-web-security --user-data-dir as startup options...I'm not sure exactly how to do that in windows - it's somewhere in the right click menus, I think.

Me too.

But I don't mind paying for doctors, and scientists, for engineers, and you know, people who give back to society. That's absolutely fine. I'm happy to pay for somebody who will earn ten times more than I do to go to university if they give something back too,

I'm not really sure it's fair for me, who has never been above the lowest earning bracket for income tax, to pay for somebody to get a degree in advertising so they can earn a fortune by lying to everyone about moodily lit tubes of toothpaste.

I think there's a balance somewhere, I don't think anyone has found it yet. I know it's hard - I personally would be happy to pay for historians, for example, because I think that gives something back to society, you may disagree because they don't do anything that offers practical tangible things you can use - but I can't help but feel that there is some good way to handle this that nobody has thought of yet.
