Olympic Games In Brazil » Post #7

They were amazing. It wasn't just that they won, they were also tactically...well, I expected somebody to try something a bit clever. I was looking to Germany with Trixi Worrack to pull it off, but the Netherlands were about ten times cleverer than I'd hoped for.

It was a horrible, horrible crash at the end. It's not often "in intensive care with a broken back" and "okay" are the same thing, but we honestly thought she was dead. For her teammate to come back and take gold anyway...they captured both the best of, and the worst of the Olympics in the space of about 40km.

What browser are you using in survey? » Post #6

Sometimes some websites don't work in some browsers. There's no escaping this. There is no one browser that will work perfectly with all websites.

Switching browsers just rotates the set of broken websites. This isn't the 90's when we're deliberately breaking IE, this is 2016 when things are broken by accident. The number of broken websites is going to be roughly equal whatever you use.

I put my money on Tatiana Guderzo for the women's road race, Becky James for the women's sprint, Alejandro Valverde for the mens road race, and then discovered my bookie won't take bets for less than 25p, and couldn't bet anymore.

ClixAddon Bonus restart? » Post #2

Thu Aug 04, 2016 08:16 in General Talk

It's not normal, but it does affect a few people and nobody knows why.

The last few days I've had several surveys with negative timestamps (eg, "available since -20 seconds ago" - twenty seconds in the future). Somebody's clock is wrong. It isn't mine (I know it's not mine because I assumed it was mine and checked). It might be Clixsense, it might be one of the survey provider. It may or may not be related to the addon problem, but since that's the first hint of a shred of a thing that could even be potentially wrong, I'm mentioning it to make sure it's documented somewhere.

I think she sounds like the lead singer of one of those typical ensembles usually hired for a village summer festivity, or for a special occasion such as a wedding (though this seems to be becoming rarer). If I may make a suggestion, listen to the original versions of those songs, there's a huge difference.

Of course, you might be hearing that simply because you like it better... but I thought I'd suggest, just in case you didn't know the original ones. :)

Yeah, you're right, the originals are better. I listened to them while I was looking for a link (the one I provided is low quality, but the version I was listening to is 4GB as it's part of a full concert, so it's either editing the video or a massive upload, so I didn't bother).

I like her in general, rather than this track specifically. In her defence though, she sings in three languages and this isn't her native one - she gets an extra point for that alone.

I was burning garden waste last night, and I had my music on. It was quiet, but it was about 11pm, so it carried a bit. Not enough for anyone to hear it inside, but when the guy next door came out for a smoke, he could hear it.

"Eeh, music you kids listen to today, I can't understand a word she's saying" (he's older than my grandad would be, so he can call me a kid).

"Yeah, that's because it's Spanish".

Paypal problems » Post #15

Mon Aug 01, 2016 05:36 in General Talk

That's the problem - I can't threaten them. I lived abroad for so many years I'm missing from all the credit scoring sites. I don't have a bad credit rating, I don't have any credit rating, which makes it difficult, because they use that as ID as well as credit scoring now. They were my last resort in the first place.

All my branch can tell me is whether a payment is in the system or not. If there's something that's supposed to be in the system and isn't, they can't tell me why, because they can't see it either. They've told me as far as they're concerned, there's still a direct debit instruction setup - but that's all they can see. All they can tell me about the missing money is it isn't in the system. The Credit Union now liases with head office, who look at the actual bank part to figure out what's going wrong, and this takes weeks, and we may or may not find out what's wrong.

Last time this happened, I never found out what was wrong. It just magically started working again when I tried it six months later - but it was the same time PayPal updated their APIs, which makes me suspect it was their fault all along.

Yeah - it says I can withdraw to my account, but in reality I can't - which sounds like exactly the reverse of what's happening to teeberry (except my bank has a monthly fee instead of penalty charges). If there's just two of us, it's coincidence. If you can find more people with similar recent issues, PayPal might have been on another bout of software updates breaking banks. This has happened to me twice before.

I'm also having problems with PayPal, though of a different nature. Nobody has charged me anything, but they've decided my bank account is no longer valid. It is, and I've been using it for years, and as far as I'm aware, nothing has changed, but they've decided it's not valid, and since it's a Credit Union account, it's difficult to argue.

The problem is they all handle payments the same way. If you're having problems with PayPal, the chances are, you're going to have problems with everyone else too. You probably want to look at more convoluted ways to get your hands on your cash. As a US member, a cheque will work fine for you.

I'm probably going to have to switch to Tango, and either hope the virtual visa cards can fund neteller, or get the bitcoin card and sell it for moneygram.

But for now, I'm carrying on with PayPal, and using it for online purchases rather than withdrawing for cash. When the summer slump is behind us, I'll take another look.

Edit to add, here is the email they sent - it may or may not be a similar issue to yours:

Quote:
Your bank has let us know that there isn't a valid Direct Debit Instruction set up
between PayPal and your bank account ending in XXXX. This means that you won't be
able to use this bank account to fund any PayPal payments, but you may still withdraw
money to it.

"How to make future payments with PayPal"

To use your bank account ending in XXXX to fund any future payments with PayPal,
you'll need to re-submit the Direct Debit Instruction. To do this, log in to your
PayPal account at<snip>

The credit union assures me there is a valid direct debit instruction, and I can't still withdraw.

But for what ? Why do i need a gun in my everyday life ? Do i need a gun at my workplace or in my bed ?

I've got a crossbow. It's a lot like cricket. Nobody actually cares about the crossbow, or the cricket. They care about being outside, and when you've run out of things to potter around with, they offer a thing to potter around with.

On a hot summers evening, I shoot a t-shirt stuffed with foam, then I go collect the bolts, then I shoot a t-shirt stuff with foam, then I go collect the bolts, and so on, until the sun goes down.

I can't carry it in public, and I can't buy broadheads (the bolts that do actual damage), and while I can kill you with a crossbow, it's harder than killing you with a kitchen knife, so I think that's fine. I certainly can't go postal with it - they're slow to load, and it's physically quite hard too. If you did try to go postal, you'd get two bolts out that bruised someone slightly before somebody else has hit you over the head with a baseball bat.

It's similar to a musket in many ways, like the founding fathers had in mind when they were talking about Americans and their rights to bear arms.

I can't make a case for crossbow ownership other than I like it, and it's up to you if you think that's good enough for me to have one on my own private land. If you think they should be banned in public, and if you think they should require a licence rather than the existing requirement of simply having to be aged 18 or above, I'm with you completely. Doubly so for a proper 150lb hunting crossbow (twice the power of mine).

I feel the same about low powered guns - a .177 or a .22 is probably fine. At the other end of the scale, there's no justification for an assault rifle.

Suckerpunch.

It's the most deeply disturbing psychological drama I've seen in years. Only the mad man can see clearly through the tangled forest though, and most people don't understand it - you only have to read the reviews to see that. If you're one of the people who don't understand it, it's still a passable action film.

When I was about fourteen, I went to the Tour de France with my cycling club. On Mont Ventoux, I did a turn on the front, then looked behind me and found...I'd dropped everyone. Turned out I was quite good. That was the first day I ever felt like a man.

I started racing after that, and won a lot. Everyone thought I was going to pro.

But, it turned out, I'd just hit puberty early. By the time I was about 18, everyone else had caught up and gone through puberty themselves, and I'd regressed from "future great" to "slightly-above-average club rider".

Yeah, pre-family, and early retirement (edit, that is "the first few years of retirement when you still have any lump sums you got at retirement age", not "retiring young") are the age groups I'm referring to.

If there's a difference between us and you, it's the age at which people have their first child. In the UK, the average age for your first kid is 30.
