⚽ Euro 2016 ⚽ Congrats Portugal⚽ » Post #197

We've just beaten England as revenge for Guthrum.

Now we'll beat France as revenge for Rollo.

Then we'll beat whoever is left standing for not joining us in this crusade so far.

There's no need to play the rest of the matches, Iceland has already won.

He doesn't need to resign. There's no shame in losing to Norsemen, Inevitability, yes, but no shame.

No of Tasks,Offers & Surveys people from US,UK get » Post #2

40-50 ads is the normal range. Some days go as low as about 25, some as high as about 65, but 40-50 is the standard deviation.

I don't do tasks, but I don't think there's any real difference between countries here. In fact, you probably get more if you're not from an English speaking country because of all the translation jobs.

Surveys are swingy. 2-8 is the normal range, except weekends.

Offers, three a day, worth 1c each, but I don't spend any time on offers, so you probably want someone else to answer that.

Also, it's a myth that the UK is a top tier country. It was at one time, but not anymore. The US and CA are tier one. The UK does better than tier 2, but much worse than US/CA.

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy, A Trilogy In Five Parts (The omnibus).
- Douglas Adams

Presently half way through Life, The Universe, And Everything. Of course, I've read it hundreds of times before, but it's one of those collections you have to read at least once a year.

The Tango Card may offer a bitcoin payout eventually, maybe, perhaps.

MarsCoin is an attempt to make Bitcoin the official currency of Mars.

So, perhaps - it depends what happens with Tango.

Tour de France 2016 » Post #3

Post suspension, Contador has under performed at the Tour, but always with a reason. 2013, he was ill for a month in the build up, 2014 he broke his leg, 2015, he did the Giro first - and nobody has pulled that off since Pantani.

In the Dauphine he looked like a 2009 Contador physically. He under performed in terms of results - but after being isolated from his team mates on one stage, and then after trying serious long range attacks on the other two. He was stronger than the results alone would suggest. I don't think he was physically behind Froome, I think he was tactically behind Froome.

So yeah, he's beyond his best, but I don't think he's decisively beyond his best.

Brexit Referendum Results! What Do You Think? » Post #6

Worrying is an understatement, but more importantly, there just isn't a mandate to leave.

If we have a new prime minister in October, and then kick off article 50, by the end of that two years, with a mortality rate of 9/1,000, and given that the leave vote was mostly old people, by the time brexit is negotiated, remain will have a majority if you recount the existing votes, but only count those of people still living.

Before you consider any other issue, there just isn't a meaningful mandate to leave - least of all from those who will still be alive to see it.

The three areas in Yorkshire - Leeds, Harrogate, and York - to vote remain are the three areas I personally campaigned in. My only regret is not campaigning in more areas.

So, the Tour starts next weekend, who is going to win?

Marianne Vos can't enter, but is the greatest athlete of all time, so you can vote for her anyway.

I think Contador was deceptively strong in the Dauphine, but Quintana has disappeared to Colombia where he may or may not be flying.

But I'm voting Pinot because he's more likable.

I'm a huge Nick Cave fan, I won't disagree with you there - it just reminded me of the other two. Nick Cave has done his own take on a lot of Guthrie/Seeger/Leadbelly stuff.

Even if you are a business, a business account isn't always the right choice. Basically don't open a premium or business account until they either make you, or you need the features. The fees are higher. If you can't identify why you need one, you don't.

Yeah, but I've been less adventurous so far - kodi box, retropie, etc. The tablet will be my first actual "use it to build something" project. Raspberry Pi 3 Model B + 7 Inch Touchscreen + powerbank array + solar case is the plan.

Dev server rental first. Excess has gone on solar panels and laptops and stuff in the past.

Now saving for components to make a self-built tablet. It'll come in at about $200, but it'll be bloody awesome.

If you're speaking in your second language, it's generally easier to do so with somebody else who is also using their second language. In my experience - as a former teacher in a language school - most people seem to find it easiest to speak English with a Dutch, Norwegian or German before starting to speak to native English speakers.

Native speakers, even when they're trying, find it difficult to repress their accent and reduce their dialect. I can speak standard English with Received Pronunciation ("BBC English") now - but it took me a decade of living in lots of foreign countries to learn it.

I think the guy in this video can pull it off by being a native bilingual speaker as well as a polyglot.

10 Things That Will SHOCK You About Germany » Post #7

Sat Jun 25, 2016 06:28 in General Talk

The bit about nazi jokes is surprising to me, and I suspect it's not true.

For starters, most nazi jokes I know I learned from Germans. I think the thing you can't do is make "jokes" that conflate "German" with "Nazi", otherwise, nazi jokes fly about as well in Germany as anywhere else. They may still be offensive, but not more so than anywhere else in the world.

I've definitely told nazi jokes in Germany, and it was definitely a German who started it.

The only German I know who is offended by nazi jokes that do not conflate Germans and nazis was alive during World War 2, so she gets a pass.

Or maybe I just have messed up friends, which wouldn't really be surprising.

The most shocking thing about Germany for me though, is Mutti. You start off thinking it's quite quaint, and then the more time you spend with Germans, the more you start to suspect it might be a Futurama reference.
