Quote:I like my job. Oh, I like it a lot. And I'm not depressed by it. And I don't think the world is full of criminals and full of murderers because it isn't. It's full of nice people just like you. And if it wasn't for my job I wouldn't be getting to meet you like this. And I'll tell you something else. Even with some of the murderers that I meet, I even like them too. Sometimes like them and even respect them. Not for what they did, certainly not for that. But for that part of them which is intelligent or funny or just nice. Because there's niceness in everyone. A little bit anyhow. You can take a cop's word for it.

The undertaker, because you just pressed -> -> A + C to do a clothesline and that's the only special move we could figure out. That game was 50p a shot, and in those days, 50p would buy you a newspaper, a pint of milk, and still leave you some change for a bar of chocolate.

Hilary Clinton will be the first woman president? » Post #15

Sat Jun 11, 2016 17:46 in General Talk

I don't understand this obsession with "first adjective" things. Who cares?

There are bad politicians, like Hilary Clinton or George Bush. There are good politicians like Meglena Kuneva or Tim Farron. It's not a gender thing, a race thing, a class thing, nothing. It's a policy, principle, and ethics thing.

I strongly recommend you forget about "first female" or "first black" or whatever, and concentrate on electing your first good president rather than your first female president. That isn't possible this election - this time you have a choice between two monkeys wtih a razorblade - get started on 2020 today.

Awful ClixGrid » Post #5

Sat Jun 11, 2016 13:23 in General Talk

It's been about a year since I sat with a pen and paper, wrote down everyone's stats and calculated the long term average, so it'll be different now, but the long term average was around 0.03c per click. That is, three clixgrid clicks are worth one microad. A bit more, or a bit less, depending on where you are on the bell curve. That's $6.50 a year. Sure, it's not a great deal, but that's the cheap bottle of plonk for your christmas dinner right there.

It's also three times more than the few surviving PTR sites pay for normal clicks, and of course, the major value is in opening up your activity bonus - which raises it's value to hundreds of dollars a year.

It collapsed because nobody shopped there since 1979, except at the end of August to spend school uniform vouchers.

In the 90's, it was a shop where your auntie might shop. In the 00's, it was a shop where your auntie might tell you her auntie shopped.

I didn't qualify. In my family tree, there isn't even any crossbreeding with the English until the 19th Century. I'm with Denmark.

In the absence of Denmark, I'm with Iceland.

Dear World , Why are We Sick » Post #2

I invented POCO ratings a few years ago. POCO = Portable Contacts. It's just a glorified address book, that ignores the platform (eg, you only have to connect to somebody once, and you're connected to them. Full stop. That is, you don't have to add them on Facebook, and then on Twitter, and then on Google Plus, and then....you just add a reference (automagically) to their existing entry.

Then, when you're looking at reviews, instead of looking at what random strangers have to say, it just looks up your friends, and friends of friends, an optional number of levels deep.

This idea failed, but not because it wasn't good. It failed because POCO just didn't really take off, and through personality politics (I wasn't tactful in pointing out the failings of the other developer involved in this particular project, and that was a fight we both lost).

This is still how you fix the problem.

Do you support Universe Basic Income? » Post #5

Quote:A doctor who spend 10 years in university will earn the same as the guy who repair cars ?

No, that's not what happens, that's davidbugs idea of what happens. Unless he's really asking about his idea rather than the thing that's actually been proposed by anyone...

Universal Credits (in this country, as proposed by the Liberal Democrats, but completely different to what was implemented by the Tories) is just a minimum guaranteed income, like welfare benefits. Paying it to everyone reduces the cost of the welfare state by reducing administration costs, albeit, by reducing the number of people involved to deal with claims (ie, costing civil service jobs) and by recouping it from higher earners. To keep the maths simple, if universal credit pays $10, and you currently need to earn $100 before you pay tax, after Universal Credit, you have to start paying tax at $90.

Most importantly, it removes the stigma from vulnerable people - like the disabled, and the homeless - who are no longer "welfare scrounger" political footballs.

You can still earn more than the universal income, but you can't earn less.

In principle, yes.

In practice, it depends entirely on the specifics of the implementation. I can see more ways to do this badly than to do it well. That doesn't mean it can't be done well, but as long as we insist on electing leaders who despise us...

Not really - it was largely tolerated or ignored until the 12th century. There are plenty of gender fluid and omnisexual gods in paganism, nevermind men and women. It wasn't just accepted, practitioners were worshipped!

It was firmly the Abrahamic religions that introduced this nonsense.
