GT Distractions -- Time to check your Updates » Post #358

For the Kubuntu types, congratulations on choosing KDE, you chose wisely. But KDE 5 performance is still sucky with some cards. You probably want to try a live CD before updating (I think 15.04 is still KDE 4, right? If not, ignore me).

Anyone else get this far in the process? It has gone from add to payout to cashout(whatever that means---) so i guess it is moving along...we shall see--7 days total so far-not bad

You can add to your cashout until they've started to process it. Once they've started to process it, you can no longer add to it, and you'll be paid within 48 hours.

You can only request cashout once every seven days, since you've been waiting seven days, you can cashout again before you got your last payment.

Perhaps confusing, but it's a good thing - you're about to be paid.

Quote:Elancer.. Is it same like freelancer? could not get successful bidding..

It's the same sort of thing, yeah, but there's more serious work at elance.

The trick to winning bids is in your git logs. You can just say "I'm experienced with this, I've built hundreds of sites". Say "Here are the development logs for some projects I've worked on in the past". Bonus points if your commit notes include things like "SECURITY: {{stuff that fixed a bug}}" rather than "UI: made box shadow bigger".

Wait, you're panicking over losing a job and you're an Indian developer?

There's plenty of work for developers, what you need is a git log to back it up.

Join an open source project. Any, it doesn't matter which. In fact, the more obscure the better - because more obscure projects struggle for developers and are more likely to accept pull requests from anyone who makes them. Spend a year or two checking in code regularly, then sign up for elancer, and you'll never have to work for anyone else again (unless your economy picks up and the cost of living starts to meet ours - then it starts to get tricky).

There aren't lots of problems. There are issues with Neteller, but other than that, there's only one problem. There are lots of threads, but one problem - they all say "When will I get paid? How long is it after requesting that I should start worrying that I've been missed and open a support ticket?"

Because we have no answer - there is no upper limit - we can't answer the question (beyond "about a week"), so we get dozens of copies of the same problem every day.

Empires rise and empires fall. This is the way of the world. It doesn't matter if it's a political empire, a corporate empire, whatever. Every empire falls.

True wealth lies not in money, but in what it affords you.

At some point you have to stop thinking about how much money you want, and what you actually want from life. What do you need? What do you want? Which of those things can you do for yourself, and which of those do you have to pay somebody else for?

If you decide to waste your life keeping up with the Jones's, that's exactly what you'll do.

Delayed Payments » Post #2

My last one took eight days (seven, if you adjust for time zones). That's late, but only by one day over what we've come to expect.

I'm self sufficient enough to live with nothing.

If the average wage is 1000, I'd need about 250 for luxuries, pet food and the occasional replacement of batteries - no matter how well you treat them, they don't last forever.

If you want more money, you don't have to earn more - you can also spend less.

Nobody is worried that they're not paying. There's just a constant uneasy feeling about when. A limit, cast in stone gives you that peace of mind. I don't care if it's monthly. I wouldn't even care if it was quarterly if they had a transition period. I just need this upper limit. I know I shouldn't be relying on a GPT site to pay my hosting bill, but times are hard and the alternative is firing someone, and I'm not a big enough arsehole to fire anyone.

I don't think it's unviable as it is - it's just lacking clarity. I'll go back to my very first comment when they brought this in - they're missing a "and all payments will be made within x days". Right now it's "I need my money on this date, lets guess how long it will take". With a "and all payments will be made within 7 days", you'd go "I need my money next Friday, I'll cashout on Thursday to be safe".

And, since they do tend to pay within seven days, so it wouldn't make much difference from their end, while giving us the certainty we need.

I'm not worried about getting paid - I know I'll get it. I'm just struggling financially - as are most people here - and I'm relying on this to pay for my dev server. I'm not even worried about how long it takes - taking a week is fine. It's just having no upper limit to schedule requests around that's stressful. For me, anyway.

You're right, I'm talking out of my arse.

I was very never good with time - checking my paypal history, you've got to go back a few years to find the earlier payments.

Exactly - you used to get paid early afternoon.

Quote:"if it's not broke, don't fix it"

But it was broken. You might not have noticed your side of the pond, but I did. A year ago, I could get paid by Clixsense, buy something online and get same day shipping. By the end, I was getting paid long after those deadlines. It might not have been obvious to everyone, but payouts were taking longer and longer.

I was getting a bit stressed out over this payout. I needed it by today at the very latest, and I did get it today, but it was stressful. So no, I don't like these new terms either - but it was broken.

If we want something better, we can't just say "Go back to the old way!" because that was broken too. Someone needs to come up with a workable solution rather than a complaint.

Can we talk about other PTCs » Post #4

I just wish they'd report real HTTP codes. We have standards for a reason.

You can't talk about other PTCs, but the 522 HTTP code is imaginary. It's not a real thing.

Crowdflare spits it out when you can reach crowdflare, but crowdflare cannot reach the server you actually want. There's no way for anyone to know what the problem is other than that the server is down for some reason.

Yeah - it would have been less good at putting losing a job into perspective if it ended "and now I'm dying".
