They also have the single most ridiculous version of Rocky Road To Dublin, which is ridiculous in it's own right, even when pure folkies play it.

Do you think entertainers are overpaid?? » Post #2

Sun Dec 13, 2015 09:30 in General Talk

The overwhelming majority of entertainers are paid a pittance, and most doctors are paid very well. Most entertainers are playing the working men's club, and the occasional wedding and have good hourly rates, but few hours of work.

On average, the balance is probably right.

Are the outliers - the very few very visible entertainers who make the millions - worth what they're paid?

I don't think so - but since people voluntarily pay for their services, and it's not taxed, I'm not sure it's any of our business who anyone else gives their money to.

It's a clickbait ad from a survey popunder.

The answer is 104, but they've changed the puzzle to a simpler one, because telling people they're in the 10% of people who solve the puzzle, and not the 90% of fail works better for clickbait.

Working on CF in Windows 10 WOW...... » Post #43

If only there was some software you could use instead of Windows, maybe named after Deborah and Ian that was well developed, and ran half the internet, powered the stock exchanges of the world, came free of malware, and free of charge, and could even run most Windows software too...

Three to four working days seems average so far.

Emphasis on working. "I requested on Friday evening, it's Monday morning now, that's nearly a week" has become a somewhat common theme...

Make sure you do the second half of the survey, which will come via email rather than via Clixsense. It took me a year to get my first sample, and I get one every two or three weeks now - I'm pretty sure they do keep track of who completes both halves of the survey, and who does not.

The changes were brought in on the first, and the bonus will be paid no sooner than 10 days after a referral sign up. Today is the first day anybody will be paid under the new policy, so the chances of finding someone who got a referral on that particular day and posts on the forum is quite low.

VPS = virtual private server.

They're normally used for running websites that need a more powerful server than shared hosting (and I've got a whole bunch of them for that too), but you've got root, and a command shell, and you can control them remotely, and make them do whatever you want, including bypassing geographic restrictions - governmental or otherwise - since when you use them, the IP/location/etc will resolve to the server rather than to you.

I have a VPS in Lithuania. This may or may not be related to government censorship.

Are these Spanish movies?

Rhapsodiya V Byalo is Bulgarian. Lucia Y El Sexo is Spanish.

I'm not sure how to describe them. They're completely different, they have nothing in common, yet they're the same. I suppose they're both sort of a surreal, but relatable homage to the human condition.

I've just had this exact conversation on another forum a few days ago, so I'll just copy and paste what I said there.

Quote:Do I literally believe Freyja will be waiting for me upon my death to take me to Folkvangr?

No.

Do I read the scriptures, and understand them as a metaphor to narrate an animistic world view, and ressonate with them at a level I can only describe as spiritual, without literally believing in a spirit either? Do I believe, in this context, that this is Fimbulvetr, and Ragnarok will be survived only by those who have returned to Yggdrasil?

Absolutely. And so do many others, this is why more and more people are moving off the grid every day. They don't call it returning to Yggdrasil, but that's what they're doing. Empires rise, and empires fall. Fimbulvetr is just a name for the start, Ragnarok for the end.

Is it a coincidence that affinity with the Norse Gods grew, as I returned to a life style similar to that in which they were written? Of course not.

You can call me a Heathen in the same way you can call a nastika Hindu a Hindu. Or you can call me an animist. Or an atheist.

I don't believe Ragnarok is the end of the world or anything like that - and it's not described as such in the Poetic Edda either. Rather, the old guard fight among themselves, resulting in mutually assured destruction, and those who survive these events are those who remove themselves from the picture.

Watch the EU breaking at the seams, the uneasy stand off between the EU and US with Russia, and everybody against ISIS (with differing longer term goals). The rise of the extreme right, and occasionally, extreme left - the populists threatening the status quo....if you change the names of the countries to the names of Norse Gods, it's the very same story.

So, I don't literally think Odin is going to battle Fenrir any time soon - but I do think we're approaching approaching another Autumn of Nations, or Arab Spring.

Can we change the server time? » Post #3

Wed Dec 09, 2015 17:05 in General Talk

Letting users set the server time would certainly be "interesting", but no, it's not something you can do. (Well, you probably could if you were sufficiently determined, but not by any legal means, but I digress...)

The server time is, well, the time on the server. The client side times are mostly relative "20 minutes ago" to the viewers time zone, so I'm not sure why you would want to...What do you want to achieve? There may or may not be a way to achieve it, depending on what it is exactly you want to do.

Define "easy".

It's technically trivial, but resource intensive.
