Rhyming Slang. » Post #6

Clam, as in quid > squid > clam

Obfuscated rhyming slang is better than rhyming slang.

Ever wondered where all those glue sniffers from the 80's went?

There are two schools of thoughts on profile pictures.

The first is that you should be consistent with them, so you can be recognised wherever you are. I have hundreds of usernames, but the photo is always me. Different photos of me, but I'm weird and eccentric, so you always know it's me.

The second is that you should be inconsistent with them so you cannot be recognised anywhere you are. This is a better plan if you're a nobody likes you, or if you have one of those faces people just want to slap.

People imitate people they respect. If you're respected - or better yet, liked - you should always make sure people know who they're talking to at a glance.

Personally, I'm like Marmite - brown and sticky. I mean, you either love me or hate me, but it tends to be better to have that consistency than not.

Christy Moore - The Grey Lakes Of Loughrea. Arguably (read "unquestionably") the most beautiful song ever written.

Padraig Fallon wrote the original lyric, though this version has some new verses, and nobody seems to know where they sprung up from.

Geo Targeting » Post #6

Geotargetting is uploading a library and adding eight lines of code to increase the amount you can charge somebody for internet traffic in order to save them the hassle of uploading a library and copy-pasting eight lines of code themselves.

I exaggerate slightly, you also need if ($country == 'whatever') { .. } for any country you want to filter. So ten lines of code.

Edit, in fact, it's been years since I read the doco, and I've had significant feature creep in my location services since which has made me over estimate the number of lines you'd need. I think you can actually do it in four.
Code: Select All
require_once("/path/to/geoip.inc");
$country = geoip_country_code_by_addr($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']);
if ($country == 'GB') {
do stuff.. }

Untested, but should do the trick.

Wait for a moderator. It's normal for all new users.

I remember it well because my first posts were about a nasty bug - the wait was frustrating to say the least.

I'm sure it's fine for what it is - it's just not Mad Max.

Most reboots are like this, and not just in film either. I'm especially bitter about Fallout 3 (game), the Dawn Of The Dead remake (film), And Another Thing...( book),

The only reboot/remake that got it right was the 1979 remake of Nosferatu.

That's exactly what's wrong with it - Fury Road is nothing like Mad Max, and doesn't fit into the franchise at all.

It's like making a an action-horror movie, calling it Casablanca 2, and acting all surprised when people complain it's nothing like Casablanca.

Where are all the semi-naked men? » Post #1

Just watched the Cycling World Championship Time Trial, and in the lack of any Jorvik interest, the win going to another Viking was the best we could hope for, even if Linda Villumsen is riding for New Zealand for some reason.

But, in the men's sport, once you're on the podium you get pretty ladies who give you alcohol, and some flowers and a fluffy toy to give to your wife by way of apology when she see's you kissing the podium girl.

In the women's sport, you get...uh, pretty ladies who give you some flowers.

Why don't the women get large bottles of alcohol and fluffy toys?

I'm all for pretty ladies in podium ceremonies. I don't race anymore, but when I did, that was the best bit, but if the men can get women in tightly-clad form hugging dresses, why don't the women get a buff men in nothing but tight shorts and a bowtie?

Oh, God no. I come from the land of Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye, Guy Fawkes, Dracula, Heathcliff and Cathy, and Brian Blessed. Our flag is a white rose on a blue background - Clixsense just don't offer it.

Nicest thing anyone ever said to me was at this years Tour de Yorkshire. Couple of German lads told me I looked "like film star from Summer Wine program".
