I thought I would post this because it is very unusual - usually people get scammed of money. A few days ago as I came back home at the end of the day, I got one of those e-mails from PayPal that says I received money. Wait......money you say ? I was not expecting money from anywhere I did not withdraw money - but even more frightening, the e-mail body said I received $180 USD - so my first reaction is - SCAM, this is classic phishing - I receive countless e-mails telling me I won unclaimed money, etc. so for sure I thought this was one of those paypal phishing scams. It came from intl.paypal.com - hmmmmm seems legit, so I decided to log on to my paypal (not through the e-mail of course - I know better
) and lo and behold, I truly see $180 USD deposited in my account. It came from an individual I never heard of, I do not know, so I thought to myself some random strange decided to gift me $180, but then I read the details of the transaction - it was in spanish and this is where it gets interesting - it was a buyer transaction paying for services, now wait get your g******** mind out of the gutter
the service was some sort of astrology thing. I was not too happy because I have a PayPal Personal, not a BUSINESS, I am not a seller and do not sell anything, and even worse, how the bloody hell did the person get my e-mail, it is not shared with anybody. Now here is the twist, I get another e-mail this time from the person herself who sent me that money, again all in Spanish, saying that she sent the money by "error" and would greatly appreciate if I refunded her, thank you so much
Of course I would have refund the money either way. Mistakes happen right ? But how the HELL did she get my e-mail to send the payment to - in the transaction history it said that this was a payment for astrology program ? and her address is in Uruguay - So I am very confused here, of course I refunded her the money, I also called PayPal and let them know about this, and I sent her an e-mail telling her about the refund but asking her how she got my e-mail ? Several e-mails and she did not reply. This is strange to say the least, PayPal of course told me not to worry this will not affect my account - however since this transaction was meant for a seller, I immediately got an e-mail from PayPal that my tax information was received and sent to the IRS. For what ? I am not a seller, I am not a business.......What a bloody mess.
I wish I could write her name and mailing address here so people can be careful, BUT I won't to respect her privacy just in good faith in case it is a genuine mistake - although it does not explain how she got my e-mail though, could be someone with similar e-mail and typo it's ok, the least etiquette she should have replied to me and told me where she got my e-mail, didn't even bother. I did the right thing and refund the bloody money - I feel bad for her though because who in their right mind would spend all that money for QUACKERY, wish I could warn her that she is being scammed $180 by some charlatan but it's probably too late, and besides she did not even bother replying ot me.
OR I could have kept the money and gave her a fortune reading
When sh** like that happens there is only one thing you can do and should do - REFUND and contact PayPal. Some people would be tempted to keep money, but you don't know where the money comes from, if it's from a compromised PayPal or funds obtained illegally, your PayPal account can become restricted. I would have refund the money even had she not contacted me - even money coming from random sources with "This is a gift keep it" you don't know where that money comes from.
So what do you think this was ? Was this a genuine mistake or some new clever money laundering scam ?
Did it ever happen to you to receive random money in PayPal ? When I spoke to PayPal on the phone the agent said she had never received a call of that nature, and she said I did the right thing as most people would not refund - that in itself is weird, because since this was clearly a payment for a service and not a GIFT, it was subject to a dispute.........
On that note I am still waiting for my Publisher's Clearing House winnings - I am always so close to winning that $10 million, and every year is the right one
