And I've always heard that businessmen are very likely to die from a heart attack due to high stress levels.
Some people smoke like a chimney and never get to develop a cancer, on the contrary, they get to live a pretty healthy life until they die in their 90s. Some non-smokers die from lung cancer at the age of 30. Of course, I'm not saying smoking is harmless, but it obviously doesn't affect everyone in the same way.
A few days ago, I read about an Indian man having to undergo a surgery where doctors removed lots of blades from his stomach. Apparently, the man had started to like the taste of metal and secretly ate knives and the like. You could see a picture with the rusted razors. I wonder how he got to survive that. He just promised he'd never do it again.
My view on all this is that the human body is an amazing and unpredictable machine, and scientific researchers are continuously contradicting each other, as every person is unique. What might benefit some of us, might kill others. What might kill me, might end up making you stronger.
So I'd say, do what you feel is personally of benefit to you. If you try something and it doesn't work for you, don't get obsessed just because someone said you had to do it. You'll die when your time comes, neither sooner nor later.
Don't count the number of heartbeats... make them count.
